Coffee & Kareem

A Detroit cop teams up with his girlfriend's precocious 11-year-old son to clear his name and take down a major criminal. It's a raucous buddy-cop comedy that leans hard into chaos and kid-versus-adult friction, with genuine chemistry between its leads and a willingness to let things get delightfully stupid. For anyone who wants action-comedy that doesn't take itself seriously.

TMDb rating2.7

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy buddy comedies where a rumpled cop and a sharp-tongued kid trade barbs while the bullets fly, and you don't mind an R rating's bluntness.

Skip it if you want a tight, plot-driven thriller, since the crime story is a loose frame for jokes and the action is more scrappy than polished.

What it asks of you: Eighty-eight minutes, brisk and rarely still, it switches quickly between gags and gunfire, asking you to keep pace rather than settle into any mood.

Rush Hour1998

Two cops with clashing personalities forced to work together—the template Coffee & Kareem follows, but with Jackie Chan's physical comedy and a buddy dynamic that actually lands. Effortless charm and real stakes.

But The action can feel dated, and the cultural stereotyping hasn't aged well. If you need modern sensibilities, this might ping your radar.

Ride Along2014

Kevin Hart as a young civilian riding with Ice Cube's cop, creating similar fish-out-of-water chaos. The dynamic between an overeager novice and a serious professional is done with genuine warmth and humor.

But Hart's energy is nonstop and relentless. If you find him exhausting, there's no relief here.

The Other Guys2010

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as mismatched cops, with anarchic comedy that escalates beautifully. It finds humor in absurdity without sacrificing actual story or character work.

But The tone is deliberately unhinged. If you need grounded realism or quieter moments, it won't give them to you.

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Nice Guys2016

Both pit adults against their better nature to protect a kid, using that tension—paternal responsibility clashing with self-interest—as the engine for both comedy and actual stakes.

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as a private eye and enforcer forced to work together in '70s LA. It's funny and sad at once, with dialogue that crackles and a story about parenting and obligation running underneath the buddy-cop framework.

But It's more melancholic than you'd expect from its premise. The humor emerges from character rather than setpieces, which means long stretches without laughs.

21 Jump Street2012

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum rediscover friendship while undercover as high schoolers. It's smart about its own ridiculousness and has real chemistry between leads doing opposite things.

But It's built entirely on escalation and silliness. If you want subtlety or restraint, look elsewhere.

Beverly Hills Cop1984

Eddie Murphy as a cop who doesn't follow procedure, with action and one-liners that actually work. It's the granddaddy of the fish-out-of-water cop movie and still snaps.

But It's from the '80s and feels it. The pacing is slower than modern action-comedies, and some jokes have aged past their sell-by date.

Starsky & Hutch2004

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as earnest detectives in a film that loves its own stupidity. It's committed to being ridiculous without winking at the camera too hard.

But It's uneven—some bits land perfectly while others completely misfire. Patience required.

Central Intelligence2016

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart play old classmates reuniting, mixing genuine action with comedy rooted in character. It's a touch more tender than most buddy-cop films while staying funny.

But The plot gets convoluted and occasionally disappears under the weight of its own action sequences.

Tropic Thunder2008

An action-comedy about actors on a war film set who stumble into actual danger. It's confident enough to let the humor come from character and situation, with real stunts and genuine stakes underneath.

But It's long, sometimes tries too hard, and the satire occasionally gets lost in the spectacle.

Tropic Thunder poster

Cop Out2010

Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as mismatched detectives trying to recover a stolen car. It's deliberately absurd and committed to the bit, with genuine affection between the leads.

But The humor is broad and scattered. It takes forever to find its footing, and some stretches feel genuinely padded.

Free Fire2017

Like Coffee & Kareem, it finds comedy in situations where actual danger is present—the humor and stakes are genuinely balanced, not one decorating the other.

A contained single-location action-comedy where a weapons deal goes catastrophically wrong. It's almost a play: clever dialogue, character-driven action, and a commitment to consequences that makes even the slapstick matter.

But It's slow-burn until it isn't, and the entire film hinges on your patience with its opening hour of talk. Also, it's bloody and violent in ways that can overshadow the comedy.

City Hunter1993

A one-man action-comedy that finds humor in the spaces between fights, with an earnest detective at its center trying to navigate absurd situations—the ancestor of what Coffee & Kareem is doing, just with different physics.

Jackie Chan as a detective tracking criminals through Hong Kong, bouncing between comedy and action in scenes that are often both simultaneously. The physicality is extraordinary and the tonal shifts are dizzying in the best way.

But It's a '90s Hong Kong action film dubbed into English, so the dialogue is sometimes unintentionally hilarious. The plot is an excuse to get to the next action sequence, and pacing is non-Western.
