Bhaji in Problem

A Punjabi comedy about a man living a double life with two wives, juggling secrets and elaborate schemes until an old friend's arrival threatens everything. It's warm-hearted chaos shot through with genuine affection for its characters, built on physical comedy and the absurdity of lies compounding. For fans of Punjabi cinema and anyone who loves watching a carefully constructed house of cards collapse.

Carry On Regardless1961

British comedy perfected the art of male deception and chaos—a man bent on dishonesty watching his plans implode with mounting desperation. The DNA here is unmistakable: farce as philosophy.

But Sixty years old, shot in crisp black and white, and the humour moves at a different pace than contemporary comedy. Requires patience and affection for the form.

Hera Pheri2000

Punjabi-adjacent Hindi comedy about three men and a series of lies that spiral wildly out of control. Same register, same delight in watching incompetence and good intention collide.

But The tone shifts between slapstick and sentiment in ways that might feel uneven. Some plot threads wrap too neatly.

Bride & Prejudice2004

Bollywood romance meets British comedy; explores marriage, family pressure, and the gap between expectation and reality. The humour springs from cultural collision and romantic mess.

But The Bollywood framing might feel too stylized if you're after grounded comedy. Some songs go on longer than the jokes.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Wolf of Wall Street2013

Both explore how charm and desperation drive men to construct impossible parallel lives, and how those lives corrode from the inside. The scale differs; the psychology is identical.

Released the same year, same runtime, same engine: a man's compulsive lying and double life—at work, at home, in his own head—watched with ferocious energy and no judgement. Both films understand that chaos is funny because it's human.

But American, adult, savage in ways Bhaji in Problem is not. Three hours. The excess and cocaine are the point, which will feel tonally distant from warm Punjabi farce.

Bobby Jasoos2014

Witty Hindi comedy about a woman outwitting the men around her through sheer cleverness and misdirection. Shares the joy of watching lies unravel with affection rather than cruelty.

But Less slapstick than Bhaji in Problem—if you're after physical comedy, this leans harder on dialogue and plot twists.

The Importance of Being Earnest1952

Wilde's masterpiece about deception, mistaken identity, and the ridiculous games men play to avoid responsibility. The ancestor of every double-life farce; pure verbal genius.

But Theatrical and mannered—if you want naturalistic acting, this isn't it. The wit requires attention; it won't spell itself out.

The Importance of Being Earnest poster

Shershaah2021

Punjabi film with strong ensemble cast and community spirit, though this one leans dramatic. Proves the cast and creative sensibility of the region work across genres.

But Entirely different tone—serious and patriotic rather than comedic. Only here as proof the same talent pool makes many kinds of film.

Shershaah poster

The Notebook2004

Punjabi romantic drama that understands small-town life and the weight of family secrets. Gentler than Bhaji but from the same world.

But The romance dominates the comedy. If you're here purely for laughs, this will disappoint.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya2024

Recent Punjabi-inflected Bollywood about mistaken assumptions and relationships built on lies. Contemporary energy with old-fashioned farce at its heart.

But Heavy-handed at times; the message sometimes overwhelms the story. Feels like it's being made in real time.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly1966

Same structural DNA: a protagonist juggling impossible circumstances, betrayal as comedy, and the realization that you can't outrun your own mess forever. One's in Punjab, one's in the desert. Same human truth.

A western about three men pursuing the same goal through lies and deception, each convinced they're winning. The pleasure is watching plans unravel against impossible odds, with humour in the chaos.

But Slow-burn western from 1966—if you need constant action and contemporary pacing, this will test your patience. Requires sitting with silences and landscapes.
