Jabariya Jodi
A charming Bollywood comedy-drama set in rural Bihar, where a reformed groom-kidnapper must confront his past when his childhood sweetheart returns to his life. It's a breezy, colour-soaked story about finding love while dismantling a ridiculous criminal enterprise, blending social commentary with genuine romantic warmth. Perfect for anyone who loves Hindi cinema's ability to make you laugh and feel something true at the same time.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a kidnap-caper premise bent into a love story, where the absurd setup is played straight-faced and the tug between a lovestruck hero and his old flame carries the scenes.
Skip it if you want the dowry subject handled with real weight, since the film treats its premise mostly as a lark and runs long for a romance.
What it asks of you: Settle in for nearly two and a half hours, with broad farce giving way to a softer, more sentimental stretch that asks you to care about the leads' choices.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania2017
Same director, same chemistry between leads, same gift for making small-town romance feel epic and urgent. Sidharth and Parineeti shine in romantic banter that crackles with real attraction beneath the broad comedy.
But If you found the gender politics of Hindi romance films frustrating five years ago, this won't have aged better. It's of its moment, proudly.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya2024
Parineeti Chopra in a lead role where she carries the entire romantic comedy with warmth and comedic timing. It has the same lightweight charm and digestible entertainment value without pretending to be anything it isn't.
But It's very modern rom-com, which means if you're specifically hungry for the grittier, rural-set energy of Jabariya Jodi, this feels too polished and metro.

Piku2015
A Delhi-set romance that also works as social comedy, with real affection for its characters and their flaws. It proves Hindi cinema can be smart about relationships without losing warmth or humour.
But It's more subdued and character-driven; the energy is lower, and there's no kidnapping subplot to keep things moving.

Both films use Bihar's social realities (dowry culture, caste hierarchy) as their engine, but one builds romance from it while the other builds rage. They're the inverse of each other.
Ayushmann Khurrana investigates caste-based crimes in rural Bihar—same state, same year, completely different energy. It's proof that Hindi cinema can see the same landscape and tell either a love story or a rage. Both true.
But It's grim and angry where Jabariya Jodi is playful. If you wanted escapism, this is a documentary's bite wearing a thriller's skin.

Toilet: A Love Story2017
Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in a romance that uses social reform as its backbone, much like Jabariya Jodi's dowry commentary. It's funny, earnest, and genuinely moves you without getting preachy.
But The toilet humour (yes, literal) won't land for everyone. It's broader and less romantic than you might expect from a love story.

Happy Bhag Jayegi2016
A bride-on-the-run comedy across the India-Pakistan border with similar energy to Jabariya Jodi—chaotic, fun, and genuinely interested in character arcs beyond the romance itself.
But It spreads its charm thin across too many characters and plot threads; the story sometimes loses focus.

Shuddh Desi Romance2013
Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra navigating modern love in Delhi—lighter and more playful than Jabariya Jodi, but with the same curiosity about how real people actually fall for each other.
But It's gentler and less plot-driven; if you're here for the crime caper element, this is purely romantic comedy without the edge.

Drishyam2015
Ajay Devgn in a completely different register—a thriller about a man protecting his family. It shows how Hindi cinema can build tension and character simultaneously, something Jabariya Jodi does in its romantic moments.
But It's dark, serious, and entirely humourless. If you want more fun like Jabariya Jodi, this is the opposite direction.

Bhaiyya Ji2024
Manoj Bajpayee as a criminal trying to reform, set in Bihar with similar regional texture and moral ambiguity. It takes a rougher, grittier approach to the same territory.
But There's almost no romance, and the tone is considerably darker. It's Bihar as noir, not as comedy-drama.

The Godfather Part II1974
Both films centre on a protagonist trying to balance love and legacy, personal ambition and family obligation. Coppola does it in Italian restaurants and Sicily; the filmmakers do it in Bihar villages and wedding parties.
A epic about a man trying to escape his family's criminal legacy while being inexorably pulled back into it. The emotional weight and scope dwarf Jabariya Jodi, but the core DNA—'I wanted out but love keeps dragging me back'—is identical.
But It's three and a half hours of deliberately paced American gangster cinema. If you came here for Bollywood romance and light entertainment, this is radically different in scale and tone.

Rang De Basanti2006
Both films romanticize rule-breaking in the service of what feels like justice, and both ask whether a good intention makes a bad action okay. One keeps it light; one lets it break you.
Aamir Khan and a ragtag group making a difference in their world through unconventional means. It has Jabariya Jodi's gift for making criminality feel romantic and morally complicated, wrapped in genuine social anger and friendship.
But It's longer, more earnest, and builds toward something genuinely tragic. The fun doesn't last; the film earns its emotional weight by spending it.
