Running Shaadi
- Comedy
- Light-hearted
Running Shaadi is a romantic comedy about two friends who build a website to help young couples elope and escape strict families. It's a breezy, youth-oriented film that mines humour from the collision between traditional expectations and modern love, with enough charm and comedy to carry you through, even if the plotting isn't always tight.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy light Bollywood romantic comedies where the comedy comes from small-town chaos and sharp banter between friends who keep getting in over their heads.
Skip it if you want a tight, fast-moving plot; this one is loose and episodic, and its jokes and sentiment can feel broad and repetitive over just under two hours.
What it asks of you: Settle in for about 114 minutes of easygoing, sunny comedy with no real darkness, and keep half an eye on the wandering middle section rather than expecting every scene to land.

If you liked this
Band Baaja Baaraat2010
A wedding-planner rom-com with real wit, great chemistry between leads, and a genuinely engaging business-building story that shares Running Shaadi's energy and sense of fun.
But It's now over a decade old, and while it holds up, some of the comedy beats feel of their moment.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama2011
Young, energetic romantic comedy about men navigating relationships, with the same irreverent tone and focus on friendship dynamics that Running Shaadi enjoys.
But The humour is fairly guy-centric and relies heavily on rants; if that kind of comedy doesn't land for you, it wears thin quickly.

Bareilly Ki Barfi2017
A romantic comedy in the same year with similar warmth and chemistry, celebrating unconventional choices in love while maintaining genuine laughs throughout.
But The plot takes a turn toward the sentimental in the final act that not everyone finds earned.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Badhaai Ho2018
Both examine the collision between traditional family values and individual choice, but Badhaai Ho does it from the generation above, asking what happens when you're the parent defying your own parents' expectations.
A comedy that directly interrogates Indian family structure and generational expectation, but from the opposite angle—what happens when parents are the ones defying convention. Shares Running Shaadi's warmth but with sharper social observation.
But It's focused on parental sexuality, which some find uncomfortable; the comedy does ask you to sit with awkwardness.

Dil Dhadakne Do2015
A larger-scale romantic drama about escaping family constraints, with a cruise-ship setting that gives it visual sweep and the same theme of choosing your own path.
But It's significantly longer and more melodramatic than Running Shaadi; the tone shifts between comedy and genuine heartbreak.

Jabariya Jodi2019
Another romance built around unconventional meetings and elopement, with side-splittingly funny moments and genuine chemistry between its leads.
But The premise involves kidnapping for marriage, which some find uncomfortable even in comedic context.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects2014
A breezy comedy about marriage and relationships with Farhan Akhtar's easy charm and a focus on friendship that echoes Running Shaadi's priorities.
But It's more of a time-passer than a genuinely memorable film; the plot meanders and doesn't quite stick the landing.

Chup2022
A stylish thriller with romantic elements and a contemporary Mumbai setting, exploring passion and unconventional choices with real craft.
But It's quite dark and violent—a tonal shift entirely away from Running Shaadi's lightness, and the romance is secondary to the thriller.

Happy Bhag Jayegi2016
A cross-border rom-com chase film with the same playful spirit and the same interest in characters running toward love.
But The plot stretches credibility; it asks for a lot of goodwill and doesn't always earn it.

Premam2015
Both are fundamentally about friendship and how love changes it, but Premam treats the theme with the seriousness of adulthood, asking what friendship means when everyone's path diverges.
A Malayalam film about three friends pursuing love across different life stages, balancing comedy with genuine romance and philosophical questions about growing up. Beautifully shot and genuinely moving.
But It's in Malayalam with subtitles; the pacing is slow and meditative compared to Hindi cinema's energy, and one storyline ends in a way that devastates rather than resolves happily.

The Internship2013
Both centre on protagonists starting a business venture from scratch and the comedy of inexperienced people in over their heads. But where Running Shaadi is rooted in Indian social reality, The Internship is fundamentally a corporate fantasy with almost no stakes.
An American tech-comedy about outsiders using a business idea to win. It's lighter than it deserves to be, but it shares Running Shaadi's core appeal: underdogs building something together and the comedy of misfit teams in high-stakes situations.
But It's a 120-minute Google advertisement that most critics disliked; the comedy is broad and relies on Vince Vaughn's particular style of rambling charm, which not everyone finds bearable.
