Pyaar Ka Punchnama

A Hindi comedy-drama about three roommates whose relationships spiral into chaos when their girlfriends demand time, attention, and emotional labour. It's brash, talky, and anchored by a famous monologue where one character rants about the impossibility of pleasing women. Funny and frustrating in equal measure—you'll laugh, cringe, and argue with it.

TMDb rating3.4

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy sharp, talky young-men comedies where the jokes come from bickering friends and the awkward truths of dating, and you don't mind a loose, rambling shape to get there.

Skip it if you want a tight runtime or a tender love story; at nearly two and a half hours it leans on repetition, and its laughs are of the crude, locker-room kind.

What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, chatty stretch with plenty of set-piece scenes. It stays bright and irreverent throughout, so you'll need patience for the sprawl more than emotional investment.

Khosla Ka Ghosla!2006

A sharper ensemble comedy about middle-class Mumbai life, family expectations, and the small humiliations of adulthood. Similar warm-chaos energy with better writing and a plot that actually goes somewhere surprising.

But Gentler and less showy than Punchnama—if you came for the rants and provocations, you might find it too comfortable.

Cocktail2012

Three friends, one woman, Delhi glamour, and the exact same relationship-drama DNA. Deepika Padukone counters Kartik's energy brilliantly, and it pushes the premise in directions Punchnama was too scared to go.

But It's glossier and more romantic, which dilutes some of the comedy. Some of the gender politics haven't aged well.

Wake Up Sid2009

Ranbir Kapoor as a man-child learning to grow up through a relationship. Affectionate about its protagonist's immaturity without excusing it. Beautifully shot and genuinely moving underneath the charm.

But It's sincere where Punchnama is cynical. If you want outrage and monologues, this won't scratch that itch.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Fukrey2013

Same director, same performer (Divyendu), same structure of three guys ruining their lives through want—just the object of desire changes.

Three Delhi boys trying to get rich quick through gambling. It has the same vulgar energy, roommate-comedy skeleton, and refusal to make its men likeable, but the premise is heist and ambition instead of romance. Rawer, dirtier, and somehow more honest about desire.

But The gender politics are somehow worse. It's also noisier and less interested in the emotional fallout of its characters' choices.

Vicky Donor2012

Another Ayushmann Khurrana vehicle about taboos and masculinity in modern India. Smarter, funnier, and it actually has something to say beyond 'women are exhausting.'

But Completely different genre—it's a social comedy with heart, not a relationship complaint-athon.

Love Aaj Kal2009

Imtiaz Ali's parallel-timeline romance about how love changes across generations. Visually gorgeous and genuinely romantic, with real insight into how men and women communicate differently.

But It's earnest and wistful. Punchnama's aggressive comedy energy is nowhere to be found here.

Love Aaj Kal poster

Dil Chahta Hai2001

The template for smart, chatty Hindi films about friendship and romance. Three friends, three love stories, the friendship tested and remade. Everything Punchnama wants to be, executed with precision and generosity.

But It's twenty years old and the tone is different—more romantic, less defensive. Some may find it dated.

Dil Chahta Hai poster

Band Baaja Baaraat2010

A rom-com about a wedding-planning business that actually respects its female lead as much as its male one. Funny, energetic, and it doesn't treat the woman as the problem.

But Fundamentally optimistic about relationships, which is the opposite of Punchnama's vibe.

Band Baaja Baaraat poster

The Notebook2004

Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan Bahl in a quiet, intimate love story about two broken people finding each other. Shot with real tenderness and given room to breathe—a palate-cleanser.

But Slow, melancholic, and very indie. If you want comedy and swagger, this will feel like punishment.

Main Hoon Na2004

Shah Rukh Khan as an army officer going undercover at a college. It's silly, charming, has ensemble chemistry, and knows exactly what it is—a fun movie about beautiful people doing stupid things.

But Older, broader, and more focused on action and spectacle than character dynamics or relationships.

Main Hoon Na poster

Kahaani2012

Released the same year in the same film ecosystem, but asks the opposite question: what do women actually want? What do women actually fear?

Vidya Balan as a pregnant woman searching for her missing husband through Kolkata during the elections. A thriller, not a romance. It's the conversation Punchnama never had with itself—what if we followed the woman's story instead, with full interiority and danger?

But Tense, serious, and entirely devoid of comedy. It's also not set in the world of these characters at all.
