Shaadi Ke Side Effects
- Romantic comedy
- Light-hearted
A comedy about the unglamorous reality of marriage after the wedding ends. When an easy-going husband and his headstrong wife face pregnancy and parenthood, their carefully balanced avoidance strategies crumble. Warm and occasionally clumsy, it's for anyone who's wondered what happens when Bollywood's romantic fade-to-black actually continues into real life.

Khosla Ka Ghosla!2006
A smart, affectionate family comedy that finds humour in quotidian squabbles without ever feeling mean. It understands that marriage and family are where ideology meets bathroom tiles—and the comedy lives there.
But It's conspicuously of its time and place in a way that can feel dated if you're watching from outside India's specific cultural moment.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama2011
An ensemble comedy about love and commitment that doesn't pretend marriage is the problem—the problem is honesty, compromise, and living with another human being. Sharp and genuinely funny about modern relationships.
But The tone lurches between romantic and cynical, and not always gracefully. Some sequences lean too hard on the boys'-night energy.

English Vinglish2012
A tender story about a woman reclaiming herself within marriage, told with both comedy and genuine emotional insight. Gauri Shinde directs with real warmth and a refusal to make anyone a villain.
But The pace is deliberately slow and reflective. If you want plot momentum over character observation, you'll fidget.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Break-Up2006
Both films reject the fantasy that marriage is the happy ending. They're interested in what happens when the credits would normally roll—the texture of ordinary conflict, compromise, and the work of staying.
A film about the messy, non-cinematic collapse of a live-in relationship. It's funny without being cute, painful without being melodramatic, and utterly authentic about how couples actually fight and fail.
But There's no redemption or reunion waiting. It ends in the place most romantic comedies are afraid to go, which some viewers find depressing rather than honest.

Happy Bhag Jayegi2016
A wedding comedy that's refreshingly chaotic and unafraid of its own absurdity. Strong supporting performances and the sense that anything could happen next keeps it buoyant.
But The story is thin and relies entirely on tonal cheerfulness. If you need narrative substance beneath the jokes, you'll come up empty.

Rang De Basanti2006
A film about friendship and idealism that captures the texture of young adult life with infectious energy. The ensemble cast has genuine chemistry and the film earns its emotional moments.
But It's very long, sometimes precious about its own themes, and the tonal shifts between comedy and heavy drama don't always land.

Kahaani2012
A tight, intelligent thriller about a pregnant woman searching for her missing husband. Vidya Balan is magnetic and the film trusts its audience to keep up with its reversals.
But It's a plot machine where character sometimes gets crushed by mechanics. And the twist ending feels a little too engineered once you know it.

Queen2014
A woman takes the honeymoon solo after being left at the altar. It's genuinely funny and moving without ever becoming a sermon about independence or self-discovery.
But The whimsy can feel calculated. And it sometimes mistakes bubbly optimism for actual character development.

Tanu Weds Manu2011
A chaotic romance about two people wrong for each other who might actually be right. Funny, irreverent, and willing to let its characters be messy and flawed.
But The humour is sometimes broad to the point of silliness. And the film's attitudes toward its female characters are occasionally uncomfortable.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha2015
A comedy about a marriage between a man ashamed of his wife's weight and a woman who refuses to shrink herself for him. It has real heart beneath the premise and surprising emotional depth.
But The central conceit asks you to accept a lot of casual cruelty as setup. The film earns past it, but getting there requires patience and goodwill.

Marriage Story2019
Where Shaadi Ke Side Effects asks 'how do we stay married?', Marriage Story asks 'what does it mean when we can't?' Both understand marriage as an ongoing negotiation with another person's reality.
An operatic drama about a marriage ending, with extraordinary performances from Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. It captures the simultaneous tenderness and cruelty of two people who loved each other becoming strangers.
But It's heavy, divorce-focused, and often painful to watch. Not a film for an evening when you want lightness. The final act is emotionally brutal.

Parenthood1989
Like Shaadi Ke Side Effects, it's interested in the collision between who you thought you'd be and who parenthood actually makes you. But it's an American film from an earlier era that treats the subject as raw material for both comedy and genuine sorrow—more willing to let both exist at full volume.
An ensemble film about four siblings navigating family, work, romance and parenthood with humour and real tenderness. It's messy and digressive in the best way—it feels like life, not plot.
But The tone is uneven by design, which some find jarring. And at nearly two and a half hours, it indulges itself. The pacing would never fly in a tighter screenplay.
