Tanu Weds Manu

A breezy romantic comedy about a dutiful NRI doctor searching for a traditional bride who collides with Tanu, a spirited, unconventional woman determined to live by her own rules. It's buoyant and undemanding—the kind of film that knows exactly what it is and commits to making you smile without pretending to depth. Perfect if you want warmth, chemistry, and zero heavy lifting.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama2011

Sharp, affectionate comedy about relationships and modern urban romance. Like Tanu Weds Manu, it finds genuine humour in the collision between what people expect and what they actually want from love.

But The extended monologues can feel self-indulgent, and the film's perspective on women swings between thoughtful and frustratingly one-note.

Wake Up Sid2009

A charming romance built on the spark between two people discovering who they are. Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma have the same lived-in, playful chemistry that makes Tanu Weds Manu tick.

But It's occasionally precious and the second half loses some momentum as it tries to layer in meaning where lightness was doing the work.

Vicky Donor2012

Sharply written romantic comedy that balances genuine warmth with social observation. Ayushmann Khurrana brings the same earnest charm as Madhavan, and it finds humour without being cheap.

But The premise involves sperm donation, which the film handles with good humour but may feel gimmicky depending on your tolerance for Bollywood's approach to bodily functions.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Natrang2010

Both are about people refusing the script society has written for them. Tanu and the protagonist of Natarang are rebels in opposite registers—she through defiance, he through unexpected desire—but they share an absolute refusal to be conventional.

A Marathi-language film about a man who discovers classical theatre late in life. It's comic and bittersweet—a story about reinvention, passion, and the gap between who we are and who we want to become. Spectacular performances.

But It's in Marathi with subtitles, and its pacing is unhurried; the narrative drifts where Tanu Weds Manu races. Not a film for passive watching.

Cocktail2012

A stylish, globe-trotting romance with real chemistry between leads. It's brighter and more visually ambitious than Tanu Weds Manu but shares that same belief that romantic comedy should be fun to look at.

But The portrayal of women's sexuality is deeply contradictory—progressive one moment, retrograde the next. It can be frustratingly incoherent about what it's actually trying to say.

Jab We Met2007

The gold standard of Bollywood chemistry. Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor crackle together in a road-trip romance that's witty, sentimental, and genuinely earned. A masterclass in romantic banter.

But The final act pivots to melodrama in ways that some find moving and others find tonally jarring after ninety minutes of lightness.

Khosla Ka Ghosla!2006

Warm-hearted ensemble comedy about family, class, and urban Delhi. It has Tanu Weds Manu's gift for finding humanity in everyday chaos, and Deepak Dobriyal (who appears in both) is wonderful.

But The pacing meanders; it cares about its characters enough that plot efficiency sometimes takes a back seat.

Dil Chahta Hai2001

Stylish, intelligent romantic comedy that redefined Bollywood romance. Three friends navigate love with wit and self-awareness. It's funny without trying too hard and moves with real grace.

But Some of its gender politics feel dated now, and the third act shifts register in ways that may feel abrupt on a fresh viewing.

No One Killed Jessica2011

A procedural thriller about a hit-and-run case that doubles as social commentary. Rani Mukerji is exceptional, and it's the kind of mainstream film that doesn't condescend to its audience.

But The tonal balance between procedural thriller and courtroom drama can be uneven, and some scenes feel didactic rather than organic.

Piku2015

A deadpan comedy-drama about family, ageing, and modern Delhi. Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone banter like they've known each other for decades, and it finds comedy in the specific textures of Indian life.

But The humour is quite dry and won't land if you're not attuned to its specific register. Some may find the constant digestive jokes juvenile.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995

Tanu Weds Manu owes everything to this film's DNA: the reluctant bride, the dutiful groom, the collision between duty and desire. DDLJ codified the template Tanu Weds Manu updates with wit and speed.

The defining Hindi romantic film of the 1990s. SRK and Kajol have such effortless chemistry that they make every gesture feel earned. It's the ancestor of Tanu Weds Manu—sharper, more elegant, endlessly rewatchable.

But At over three hours, it's genuinely long, and the first half moves at a European pace that might feel slow if you're accustomed to contemporary pacing. Some gender politics haven't aged well.

English Vinglish2012

Both are about women claiming agency against expectation. Tanu does it through defiance and humour; Sridevi's character does it through quiet reclamation. Same engine, entirely different register.

A luminous, quiet film about a homemaker learning English and discovering her own voice. Sridevi is remarkable—deeply felt and funny without straining for either. It's a romance with yourself as much as with anything external.

But The pacing is contemplative, almost meditative. If you're looking for the brisk energy of Tanu Weds Manu, this will feel like a completely different film. And it absolutely is—that's the point.
