Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety
A Hindi romantic comedy about a best friend trying to sabotage his buddy's wedding, convinced the bride-to-be is wrong for him. It's a fast-paced, affectionate romp that mines comedy from the eternal tension between loyalty to your mate and loyalty to love. Bollywood at its most unashamed about wanting you to have fun.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy noisy romantic comedies where a friendship becomes the real battlefield and the jokes come from people who refuse to back down.
Skip it if you find 144 minutes of stubborn, escalating sparring wearing thin, since the middle stretches one joke and the romance rarely gets quiet room to breathe.
What it asks of you: It asks for a long stretch of patience with bickering and a willingness to let the comedy run loud for stretches before the warmth arrives.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama2011
The spiritual predecessor: three friends, romantic entanglements, and a famous 26-minute monologue that became a cultural moment. Same energy, same director, same gleeful embrace of male friendship as the real love story.
But The monologue is brilliant but the film around it can feel episodic and dated in parts. The gender dynamics are very much of their era.

Dostana2008
Two men pretend to be a couple to rent an apartment and chaos ensues. It has the same comedic engine—misunderstandings, escalation, a charismatic lead playing against type—and an equally joyful disregard for subtlety.
But It's broad and sometimes tries too hard. The premise ages awkwardly in places if you're sensitive to how it treats its central conceit.

Good Newwz2019
Two couples, fertility issues, and a premise built on escalating misunderstandings. Kartik Aaryan and Kareena Kapoor trading barbs with real chemistry, supported by a tight script that respects the audience's intelligence.
But It pivots halfway into sentiment and moralizing about parenthood. The comedic energy doesn't quite sustain the full runtime.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Rang De Basanti2006
Both films treat male friendship as the emotional core, not a subplot. The bromance IS the story. Rang De Basanti just takes it to moral extremes.
A British documentary filmmaker gathers six young Indians to reenact independence struggle stories. It starts as comedy and morphs into something urgent, angry, and genuinely moving. The tonal shift is seismic and earned. The friendship between these seven people is the real engine—it's what makes everything else matter.
But It's three hours and it demands emotional investment. The second half abandons comedy entirely for political rage, which some find preachy. Not a comfort watch.

Bareilly Ki Barfi2017
A woman hires a ghostwriter to rewrite her life story for her deadpan mother. Witty, character-driven, and genuinely funny without ever being mean. Bollywood comedy for people who like wit.
But It's quieter and slower than Sonu Ke Titu. If you want maximum chaos and zero breathers, you might find it slight.

Housefull 22012
Absurdist comedy that knows it's absurd and leans hard into mistaken identities and physical humour. Multiple storylines, a huge cast, and genuine laughs buried in the chaos. Comedy as a demolition derby.
But The plot is incomprehensible and there are too many characters. It's exhausting if you're not willing to meet it in a state of pure surrender.

Piku2015
Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan in a road movie about family and constipation. Tender, funny, and genuinely touching without ever sacrificing the humour. A reminder that Bollywood comedies can have real emotional truth.
But It's considerably slower and sadder than a typical rom-com. If you want unrelenting lightness, this has weight.

Kabali2016
A Tamil action film with Rajinikanth that became a cultural phenomenon. The swagger, the slow-motion walks, the absolute commitment to being cool. A masterclass in star power as a genre unto itself.
But It's a revenge film first, plot second. The action sequences dwarf the story and English subtitles won't capture the cultural specificity that makes it sing.

Judwaa 22017
Varun Dhawan playing twins separated at birth, one slick and one goofy. Physical comedy, escalating absurdity, and a willingness to be stupid in service of laughter. It knows what it is and commits.
But The stupidity is genuine and relentless. If you need your comedy to have a point, or characters with depth, move on.

Tumbbad2018
Both are films about obsession that destroy relationships. One is a comedy about a man obsessed with breaking up his friend's marriage; this is a tragedy about a man obsessed with impossible wealth. Flip the tone and you flip the story.
A horror-fantasy about a man obsessed with finding treasure in his family's cursed mansion. Visually stunning in a way Indian cinema rarely attempts: every frame looks painted. It's operatic and eerie and hypnotic, made in the same year as Sonu Ke Titu but in a completely different register.
But It's slow-burn dread, not entertainment. The colour palette is oppressive and the mood is claustrophobic. If you watch Sonu Ke Titu expecting fun, this will feel like a punishment.

Article 152019
Sonu Ke Titu celebrates Delhi youth culture and privilege without examining it. Article 15 examines what lies outside that bubble—the India that doesn't get to be comedic. Both are Delhi films but they're pointing in opposite directions.
Ayushmann Khurrana as a police officer investigating a caste-based crime in rural India. It's a police procedural that becomes a howl of rage at systematic injustice. Urgent, structured, and utterly humourless about its subject matter. Hindi cinema doing serious social work.
But It's bleak and angry and offers no comfort. The caste violence it depicts is not softened or sentimentalized. Heavy viewing that won't leave you. Not for an evening when you want lightness.
