Khoobsurat
- Romantic comedy
- Light-hearted
Khoobsurat is a Bollywood romantic comedy about a bubbly physiotherapist who crashes into the life of a reserved Rajput prince. It's pure escapism: colourful, energetic, and committed to the idea that the right person can thaw any heart. Perfect if you want to feel something bloom on screen without a trace of cynicism.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a bright, old-fashioned romantic comedy where the charm lives in a lively heroine's bluntness, lavish costume-drama glamour and a household that talks over itself.
Skip it if the humour can feel broad and repetitive, and the slight premise stretches across a long runtime, so its lightness may start to feel thin.
What it asks of you: It asks for a little over two hours of unhurried, sunny attention, happy to linger on songs, costumes and family banter rather than rushing toward its next plot point.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama2011
A Delhi-set romantic comedy with genuine bite and chemistry between leads. It's funny about how couples actually behave, and the banter feels lived-in rather than scripted. Sonam's energy would find a kindred spirit here.
But Significantly longer and less polished than Khoobsurat. The humour skews male-perspective in ways that haven't aged perfectly, and the pacing can drag in the middle.

Jab We Met2007
Kareena and Shahid's train journey romance is the gold standard for Indian rom-coms: funny, romantic, and genuinely moving. The chemistry is effortless and the writing trusts the audience to feel without being told what to feel.
But Quieter and more introspective than Khoobsurat's energy. If you're craving that bright, bubbly tone, this leans more wistful and bittersweet.

Cocktail2012
Sonam Kapoor herself in a Barcelona-set romance with Saif Ali Khan. It has that same glossy, escapist quality—beautiful people in beautiful places figuring out what love means. The chemistry sparkles and it's genuinely fun.
But It's slighter than it appears and the plot mechanics creak. The second half relies on contrivance rather than character, and some choices feel dated now.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Spectre2015
Both are fundamentally about two people from opposing worlds (royal and ordinary, duty and freedom) discovering they're each other's exception. The romance works because they're genuine opposites who make each other braver.
Before you dismiss this: Daniel Craig and Léa Seydoux have a romance embedded in this Bond film that's actually tender and strange. It's a mainstream action film that stops dead for genuine emotional connection—a prince and a woman from a different world who shouldn't work but do. The fairy-tale quality is deliberate.
But It's a 148-minute Bond film, so you're getting two hours of spy mechanics before the romance gets its due. If you want pure romance, this is 40% other things.

Bareilly Ki Barfi2017
A small-town romance with enormous charm. It's funny, colourful, and genuinely celebrates its heroine without needing her to change. Kriti Sanon has Sonam's gift for making effervescence feel genuine rather than exhausting.
But The romance takes a while to properly ignite. If you want immediate chemistry and forward momentum, this meanders pleasantly and asks for patience first.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu2012
Imran Khan and Kareena in a Las Vegas-set rom-com with real sophistication. It plays with genre expectations smartly—the banter is sharp, the romantic beats land, and it never feels saccharine despite genuine emotion.
But Depends heavily on whether you buy the central couple. If the chemistry doesn't work for you, there's not much else holding it together.

Dil Dhadakne Do2015
A cruise-ship family comedy-drama that manages to be warm, funny, and moving without ever becoming sappy. Ranveer and Priyanka are luminous together, and the ensemble cast creates real texture around their romance.
But It's more ensemble piece than straightforward romance, so if you specifically want a tight two-hander love story, the family dynamics might feel like distraction.

Ishaqzaade2012
A Lucknow-set Romeo-and-Juliet story with real passion and danger. Parineeti and Arjun Khan have genuine chemistry, and the film doesn't shy away from consequences. It's romance with actual stakes and sensuality.
But Significantly darker and more violent than Khoobsurat. The tone is gothic where Khoobsurat is sunlit, and the ending is deliberately tragic rather than triumphant.

Happy Bhag Jayegi2016
A Delhi-to-Lahore road-trip rom-com with infectious energy and a genuinely game cast. It's lighter than it should be about a serious premise, but that refusal to be heavy is oddly charming, and Diana Penty is wonderful.
But The political backdrop is treated so lightly it borders on trivialising. The romance develops from plot mechanics rather than genuine feeling, and it can feel a bit manufactured.

Akaash Vani2013
A small-town Delhi romance between a boy and girl who love each other but can't be together. It's genuine, unglamorous, and surprisingly moving. The performances feel real in a way many Bollywood films don't bother with.
But It's deliberately unglamorous and slow. If you want sparkle and colour, this offers restraint and sadness. The romance is about longing rather than connection.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995
Khoobsurat is a spiritual descendant of DDLJ—the formula of a young woman breaking through a man's emotional walls through sheer force of personality and optimism. One is the mother; one is the daughter remixing the same idea.
The progenitor of modern Bollywood romance, and it holds up. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in Europe and India: it's earnest, gorgeous, and believes in the transformative power of love with zero irony. If you loved Khoobsurat's idealism, this is where that comes from—the original template.
But It's 181 minutes and unapologetically '90s in pacing and sensibility. Modern editing would cut 40 minutes. The gender politics, while forward for their time, feel dated now.

Kahaani2012
Both are female-centred Bollywood films where the heroine's personality and agency drive the narrative forward, but Kahaani inverts Khoobsurat entirely—trading optimism for cunning, colour for shadow, straightforward romance for something deliberately obscured.
Vidya Balan as a pregnant woman navigating Kolkata during a terrorist threat. It's a thriller, yes, but it's also a love story—quieter, stranger, and far more complex than Khoobsurat. It proves that an Indian film can be sophisticated, tense, and emotionally true without needing romance to be the engine.
But It's a taut, intelligent thriller first and foremost. If you're wanting the bright, energetic rom-com feeling, this is austere and occasionally bleak. The romance is a secret the film keeps from you.
