Film
Marigold
- Romantic comedy
- Light-hearted
A feel-good romantic comedy about an American actress stranded in Mumbai who gets swept into Bollywood and falls for the film's choreographer. It's a love letter to Hindi cinema itself—colorful, earnest, stuffed with song-and-dance numbers. For anyone charmed by the excess and heart of Bollywood, or who enjoys fish-out-of-water romance with genuine affection for its setting.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a fish-out-of-water romance where a stubborn outsider slowly softens under the glitter and sheer volume of a Bollywood musical set.
Skip it if you find broad, mugging comedy and sugary sentiment hard going, or want a sharp, restrained tone; the film leans warm and loud rather than subtle.
What it asks of you: A run time of 110 minutes, light and bright in tone, with song numbers that interrupt the story and expect you to go along with them.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995
The gold standard of Bollywood romance: sweeping, romantic, genuinely funny, with chemistry that still crackles. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol make you believe in love at first sight across a train compartment.
But It's long, unapologetically sentimental, and the gender politics are dated. If you need your romance stories lean and modern, this will test your patience.

Bride & Prejudice2004
Gurinder Chadha's bold English-language adaptation of Jane Austen set across London, India, and Los Angeles. It has Bollywood spectacle, genuine wit, and Aishwarya Rai's luminous presence grounding everything.
But The script sometimes strains under the weight of adapting Austen to three continents. The tone wobbles between satire and sincerity in ways that don't always land.

Monsoon Wedding2001
Mira Nair captures the chaos and beauty of a Delhi wedding across class lines with infectious energy. Colorful, funny, heartfelt—it has the same affection for Indian culture that Marigold does, but with sharper storytelling.
But It's an ensemble piece, so the romance gets less focus than you might want. Some subplots feel underdeveloped in favor of capturing the wedding's beautiful mess.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Decameron1971
Both use sumptuous location shooting and elaborate set-pieces to celebrate storytelling itself as an act of escape and joy.
Pasolini adapts Boccaccio as erotic comedy across medieval Italy—sensual, transgressive, genuinely funny about desire and storytelling. It's ribald, visually stunning, and completely alive.
But It's graphically sexual in ways that are still shocking. If you're not ready for frank nudity and explicit content, this is a hard pass.

Rang De Basanti2006
A Hindi film about young Delhi activists that balances comedy, romance, and genuine political anger. Aamir Khan and the ensemble cast bring infectious charm and real passion to something that matters.
But The political turn in the second half is jarring if you're expecting a standard rom-com. The tonal shift won't work for everyone, and it's subtitled.

English Vinglish2012
Gauri Shinde's tender story of a middle-aged Indian housewife finding her voice in New York. It's warm without being saccharine, funny without being mean. Sridevi is extraordinary.
But The pace is deliberately slow and observational. If you need constant plot momentum, this meditative approach will frustrate you.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India2001
An epic set during the Raj that weaves cricket, romance, and anti-colonial resistance into something genuinely thrilling. Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh have real chemistry, and the film earns its three-and-a-half hours.
But It's very long and very earnest. The love story competes with larger themes, so if you're coming for pure romance, you'll get diluted portions.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan2012
A love story told across decades and continents with stunning cinematography and genuine emotional stakes. Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif have chemistry, and Yash Chopra's direction is sweeping without feeling hollow.
But It's melodramatic in ways that can tip toward unintentional comedy. Some plot turns strain credibility, and the runtime doesn't always justify itself.

Khoobsurat2014
A modern romantic comedy that's actually funny—sharp dialogue, chemistry between leads, and it doesn't confuse sentimentality with depth. Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan play off each other beautifully.
But It's lighter and less culturally ambitious than Marigold. If you want substance with your romance, this is pure confection.

Swades2004
Shah Rukh Khan returns to rural India and falls for a local teacher while grappling with whether to stay or go back to America. It's thoughtful, beautifully shot, and the romance serves a larger question about home and belonging.
But It's slower and more philosophical than typical Bollywood romance. The ending refuses easy answers, which will disappoint if you want clear resolution.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg1964
Both films use elaborate musical sequences and heightened visual style to make romance feel like the most important thing in the world, unapologetically.
Demy's masterpiece: every frame is a painting, every moment is a song, romance blooms in pure color and music. It's about what you sacrifice for love, and it breaks your heart while making you smile.
But It's a musical where actors actually sing (no famous singers dubbed in). The artificiality—the primary colors, the mannered acting—repels people looking for realism.
