Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
- Romantic comedy
- Light-hearted
A sweeping romantic comedy about two people who fall for each other on a mountain trek but are fundamentally incompatible: she's cautious and grounded, he's restless and chasing experience. When they reunite years later, the question isn't whether they still love each other—it's whether either has changed enough to make it work. Visually gorgeous, emotionally generous, funny without trying too hard.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like a romance carried by friendship, travel and messy grown-up restlessness, where the jokes and the ache often arrive in the same scene.
Skip it if you find a two-and-a-half-hour run hard to sit through, or the loud group energy of the friends wears you down before the love story settles in.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, leisurely stretch of hanging out, with its emotional turns arriving slowly and rarely hurried; give it an evening and your full attention.

Before Sunrise1995
Two strangers meet on a train and spend one magical night talking through Vienna. Like YJHD, it's about the electricity of connection and whether conversation alone can sustain love across incompatible lives.
But Deliberately static—almost entirely dialogue, no plot mechanics. If you need action or resolution, this will feel like waiting for something that never comes.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995
The spiritual ancestor of modern Hindi romance. A man and woman cross Europe together, fall in love, and face the question of whether love survives when reality—family, duty, geography—pushes back.
But Nearly three and a half hours, and the gender politics are firmly of its era. The female lead exists partly to be won, not just to choose.

Notting Hill1999
A regular person and someone extraordinary fall hard for each other, but their worlds don't align. It's funny, self-aware about romance, and brutally honest about why sometimes love isn't enough.
But Relies heavily on Hugh Grant's stammering routine, which either delights or exhausts you within five minutes. No middle ground.

La La Land2016
Two artists in LA fall in love while chasing separate dreams. Visually sumptuous, musically alive, and devastatingly clear-eyed about what ambition costs relationships. The same central tension as YJHD but in a minor key.
But Deliberately melancholic and restrained for a musical. If you want unambiguous happiness, the ending will feel like a punch.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama2011
Urban, funny, irreverent take on young love and relationships in Delhi. Sharp writing, genuine chemistry between leads, and it understands that romance and comedy aren't separate things but the same messy impulse.
But The second half slumps badly and pivots toward melodrama. Also front-loaded with male friendship banter that won't land if you're not in the mood for it.

(500) Days of Summer2009
Jumps through time to trace an office romance that feels magical until it isn't. Like YJHD, it's about two people who love each other but can't quite make it work—and why that's not actually sad.
But The non-linear structure can feel gimmicky. Some find the male lead frustratingly oblivious; others find that the whole point.

Cocktail2012
A woman moves to Mumbai, becomes a bartender, and tangles with two men who represent different versions of love. Stylish, cosmopolitan energy, and Deepika Padukone is magnetic. Similar themes of ambition versus romance.
But The plot mechanics creak loudly in the third act. It's trying to do too many things and drops several of them to chase a conventional ending.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil2016
A poet and a woman he loves navigate a friendship that's actually just postponed heartbreak. Sophisticated, musically gorgeous, and genuinely moving about how we rationalize holding onto people we can't have.
But Slower and more contemplative than typical Hindi romance. The emotional register is minor-key throughout; it doesn't offer the catharsis some viewers need.

O Kadhal Kanmani2015
A young couple in Chennai live together before marriage, which scandalized some audiences—but it's actually a tender, funny film about two people learning what commitment actually means. Fresh energy, beautiful city cinematography.
But Tamil-language film with subtitles. The supporting characters are thinner than the leads, and some scenes drag without clear purpose.
