Shaandaar

A Delhi wedding planner with a gift for chaos management tries to orchestrate a destination wedding in London while wrangling a fractured family back together. Bollywood romance meets romantic comedy mechanics: charming, earnest, occasionally messy, built on the bet that good humour and genuine warmth can smooth over almost anything. For anyone who loves weddings, Bollywood, or both.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania2017

Shahid's co-star Varun Dhawan delivers the same blend of romantic lead and comedic timing in a story about defying family expectations. Bright, optimistic, and genuinely funny about love and tradition.

But The gender politics can feel dated even by Bollywood standards, and it runs long on sentiment and short on surprises.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani2013

The definitive modern Bollywood romance: gorgeous, funny, about real people making complicated choices. If you liked Shaandaar's warmth and ensemble chaos, this captures that energy perfectly.

But It's a three-hour commitment with a structure that can feel predictable if you know the formula.

Fukrey2013

An ensemble comedy about young Delhi men navigating friendship, ambition and love. Irreverent, clever, genuinely warm about its characters despite mocking them constantly.

But The humour trades heavily in crude jokes and stereotypes; it's funnier if you know Delhi and its rhythms.

Wedding Crashers2005

Both are wedding-centred comedies about characters who use charm and chaos to fix broken families while falling for the wrong person. Same engine, different fuel.

An American comedy about two con artists who crash weddings to meet women. The DNA is identical to Shaandaar—chaos, charm, family dysfunction, romance that sneaks up on you—but in a completely different register.

But It's raunchier and cruder than Bollywood fare, with hangovers instead of honour. If you want Shaandaar's earnestness, this is its cynical American cousin.

3 Idiots2009

Rajkumar Hirani's masterclass in making a three-hour film fly. It's about friendship, family pressure and what success actually means—serious themes wrapped in comedy and music.

But It wears its earnestness visibly, and if you're cynical about inspirational stories, it won't convince you.

Rustom2016

Akshay Kumar in a stylish thriller-romance about a naval officer accused of his wife's murder. If you want Shahid-like charm but with intrigue and suspense threading through.

But It can't quite decide if it's a thriller or a romance, and that identity crisis shows.

Happy Bhag Jayegi2016

A runaway bride comedy with Diana Penty and Abhay Deol that leans into absurdist humour and genuine affection. Lighter and looser than most Bollywood romantic comedies.

But The plot meanders and sometimes feels like it's making up jokes as it goes along rather than building to anything.

Veere Di Wedding2018

Four women navigating friendship, marriage and careers with razor-sharp dialogue and real chemistry. A wedding film that's actually about the people, not the ceremony.

But It's deeply female-focused, which is its strength but also means the supporting men are sketches rather than people.

Dil Dhadakne Do2015

Zoya Akhtar's ensemble family drama on a cruise ship—Shahid's peer Ranveer Singh at his most charismatic, with real emotional weight beneath the comedy.

But It's ambitious and doesn't always land; the tonal shifts between farce and genuine pain can feel jarring.

Four Weddings and a Funeral1994

Both films believe weddings are the ideal setting to strip away pretence and force characters to admit what they actually feel about each other and their families.

The template: British, warm, funny about love without being sappy, ensemble cast you believe as a real friend group. Hugh Grant stammering through genuine emotion while his world falls apart around him.

But It's 30 years old, which shows in every frame—the pacing is leisurely and the romantic beats feel quaint.

Monsoon Wedding2001

Both centre on wedding planning as the lens for understanding family secrets and repair. But where Shaandaar is buoyant, Monsoon Wedding is more searching and sad, even as it celebrates.

Mira Nair's masterpiece: a Delhi wedding seen through the eyes of the planner and the family. Visually gorgeous, genuinely moving, funny without trying, about how rituals hold families together and fall apart.

But It takes trauma seriously—there's real darkness beneath the colour and music—which can catch you off guard if you want pure lightness.
