Bobby
Bobby is a swooning 1973 Bollywood romance about star-crossed lovers from opposite worlds—a rich industrialist's son and a poor fisherman's daughter. Visually lush, deeply felt, and unashamed about its sentimentality, it captures the intoxicating rush of first love while wrestling with class and religious divides. For anyone who loves romance as a force that matters.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want a sincere, music-filled teen romance where the lovers' innocence carries the story and the class divide feels personal, and you don't mind melodrama worn openly on its sleeve.
Skip it if you find sweetness and sulking hard to sit through, since the film lingers on its heroes' longing and family quarrels at a leisurely pace across nearly three hours.
What it asks of you: Settle in for close to three hours, with long stretches of courtship and parental standoffs played earnestly, and a tone that moves between light and heavy without much warning.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995
The spiritual successor to Bobby: another romance about defying family expectations, but with added road-trip charm and Shah Rukh Khan's face. It codified the Bollywood love story for a generation.
But Nearly three and a half hours long, and the emotional register is pure wish-fulfillment—if you need your romance laced with irony or complexity, this won't deliver it.

Devdas2002
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's visual feast takes a classic Indian tragedy about thwarted love and transforms it into overwhelming cinema. The production design alone justifies the runtime.
But It's devastatingly sad and ends in heartbreak. If you're watching for catharsis rather than comfort, prepare accordingly. Also quite long at 185 minutes.

Mere Huzoor1968
A direct predecessor to Bobby's template: cross-class romance, beautiful cinematography, Rajesh Khanna at peak charm. It captures the same swoon but with slightly less of the family melodrama.
But The pacing feels slower than modern cinema expects, and the gender dynamics are very much of its era—the female lead has less agency than you might hope.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Masaan2015
Both use romance as a lens to examine rigid class structures, but Bobby believes love can overcome them while Masaan questions whether it survives the attempt.
A modern-day film that takes the class-divided romance premise seriously and darkly—what actually happens when families reject a relationship, and how that rejection corrodes the lovers themselves. Richa Chadha and Vicky Kaushal are extraordinary.
But This is not the film you watch for catharsis or happy endings. It's bleak and sometimes brutal, and it takes the human cost of social division as its subject rather than its backdrop.

Monsoon Wedding2001
Mira Nair brings contemporary energy to themes of family, class, and love. It's got the romance and the family conflict but filters them through a sharper, more modern sensibility.
But It's more interested in the family than the central couple, and it addresses some darker subjects that push it away from pure romance.

Lamhe1991
Yash Chopra's visually sumptuous film about love that transcends age and time. If you loved Bobby's sense that love is destiny, this takes that idea to its extreme—in a way that's either beautiful or uncomfortable.
But The central relationship involves a significant age gap that modern audiences often find troubling. The pacing is also glacial even by 90s Bollywood standards.

Veer-Zaara2004
Another Yash Chopra epic about lovers torn apart by borders and politics. If Bobby made you feel the ache of forbidden love, this amplifies it across two nations and a decade of separation.
But At over 200 minutes, it's almost operatic in its emotional indulgence. The melodrama can feel exhausting rather than moving if you're not in the mood.

Hera Pheri1976
A lighter take on the romance-across-class-lines theme, with Vinod Khanna and Neetu Singh. It's got humor alongside the sentiment, and doesn't take itself quite as seriously as Bobby.
But Being lighter means it's also less memorable. If you're craving the intensity of Bobby, this might feel like a step down.

Amar Akbar Anthony1977
Three brothers and multiple love stories, all wrapped in a broad adventure-romance package. It's chaotic and joyful, with gorgeous songs and the sense that cinema itself is the point.
But The plot is genuinely nonsensical if you try to follow it closely. It also stretches nearly three hours and demands you surrender to its illogic.

Umrao Jaan1981
Both films treat romantic yearning as cinematically grand and visually precious, but where Bobby celebrates love's power, Umrao Jaan understands it as a form of captivity.
A period film about a courtesan's doomed love, with Rekha in a career-defining role. It has Bobby's visual beauty and emotional intensity but refracted through a story of survival and self-preservation rather than simple devotion.
But It's a tragedy about exploitation and the commodification of desire. The heroine doesn't get rescued; she endures. The songs are magnificent but the story is punishing.

Rang De Basanti2006
Both feature young lovers whose relationship is tested by external forces, but Bobby's external forces are social class while Rang De Basanti's are political conscience—a shift from the personal to the systemic.
Aamir Khan and Soha Ali Khan anchor a film that starts as a romance but becomes something else entirely—a story about idealism, activism, and whether love survives when it's forced to share your attention with something larger.
But The tonal shift in the second half is radical and jarring. The romance gets swallowed by the political narrative, which will feel like betrayal if you came for the love story.
