Aashiqui 2
A romantic drama about a washed-up musician who discovers and mentors a young singer, only to watch their relationship crumble under the weight of ambition, jealousy, and public perception. It's emotionally raw, gorgeously shot, and built on chemistry between two leads navigating love and professional compromise. For anyone who's felt the sting of wanting something and someone simultaneously.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you hold on to a love story driven by a voice and a bruised, self-destructive heart, and you don't mind melodrama that plays its feelings loudly.
Skip it if you want a lean, restrained romance; at 132 minutes it lingers over its emotional beats, and its heightened, tear-soaked tone can feel relentless if you prefer subtlety.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, unhurried stretch where the music and the heartache arrive in waves, and give it your full attention rather than half-watching while you scroll.

Kabali2016
A stylish crime drama with a charismatic lead, pulsing cinematography, and the same willingness to let romance and dark emotion coexist. Rajinikanth brings gravitas to a morally complicated character.
But The plot doesn't always hold together; some sequences feel indulgent rather than necessary.

Raees2017
Shah Rukh Khan anchors this crime romance with real vulnerability. It captures the same tension between desire and ambition, with equally potent chemistry and a heroine who won't be sidelined.
But The second half tips toward melodrama, and the villain feels undercooked compared to the lead's internal conflict.

Hate Story2012
A revenge thriller that trades romance for obsession. Same era, same willingness to make passion destructive and messy. Unapologetically adult in its sensuality and moral ambiguity.
But The plot hinges on contrivance, and it doesn't have the character depth that makes Aashiqui 2 linger.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Blue Angel1930
Both films pivot on a man's creative ambition being hollowed out by loving the wrong person, and a woman who becomes the symbol of everything he's lost.
A German Expressionist masterpiece about a respected man destroyed by obsessive love for a cabaret singer. It's the template for the entire tragic musician-muse narrative. Marlene Dietrich is unforgettable.
But Silent-era pacing and very dark—this is about degradation and desire with no redemption. Not Bollywood catharsis.

Ek Villain2014
Another Mohit Suri film with Sidharth Malhotra, built on the same architecture: love as a weapon, music as emotional currency, a couple undone by circumstance. Dark, stylish, and genuinely unsettling.
But It's heavier on plot mechanics than character study, so the emotional payoff depends more on your tolerance for thriller conventions.

Aashiqui1990
The original that launched the franchise. If you want to understand the DNA—young talent, glamour, sacrifice, and a soundtrack that becomes the emotional core—this is where it began. Rahul Roy's performance is heartbreaking.
But Pacing and production values feel very '90s. The gender dynamics will frustrate modern viewers.

Fitoor2016
Abhishek Kapoor's adaptation of Great Expectations, set in Kashmir. It has the same lush visual language, a star-crossed romance, and the theme of ambition poisoning love. Katrina Kaif is excellent.
But Overlong and self-consciously arty. Sometimes beauty is prioritized over storytelling momentum.

Jism2003
A sensual thriller about two people whose chemistry masks danger. It pioneered Mahesh Bhatt's house style: erotic tension, moral ambiguity, and romance as a trap. Emraan Hashmi and Bipasha Basu are magnetic.
But The plot is contrived, and it relies on shock value more than sustained character development.

Happy Bhag Jayegi2016
A lighter, more comedic take on romance across borders. It keeps the music and sentimentality while leaning into absurdity. Good palette cleanser if Aashiqui 2's darkness exhausted you.
But The humor doesn't always land, and the romance can feel thin compared to more dramatic alternatives.

Bobby1973
Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia in the film that essentially invented the Bollywood romance template. You'll see the roots of every film on this list, including Aashiqui 2. Also genuinely moving.
But Very long, very '70s, and the class dynamics are uncomfortable by today's standards.

A Star Is Born2018
Identical thematic core—the impossibility of sustaining romance when one person is climbing and the other is drowning—but American, modern, and gritty rather than melodramatic.
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in a contemporary retelling of an American classic. Two musicians, one ascending and one falling, tangled in love that can't survive the mathematics of fame. Raw, angry, and unexpectedly funny.
But If you've seen any version of this story, you know where it goes. The inevitability can feel suffocating.

Jai Bhim2021
Mahesh Bhatt appears in Aashiqui 2; Jai Bhim shows the other side of his creative DNA—same intensity about human suffering, but directed outward at systems rather than inward at relationships.
A courtroom drama about injustice and love's endurance, with Suriya in a powerhouse performance. It's Mahesh Bhatt's sensibility applied to a completely different register: brutal, political, uncompromising.
But Not a romance—it's a social thriller that will exhaust you emotionally. Long, demanding, and deliberately painful.
