Kaatru Veliyidai

A Tamil romantic drama set against the Kargil War, following a fighter pilot and a doctor whose passionate, unequal love story is interrupted by military conflict. Visually stunning but emotionally uneven, it trades subtlety for intensity. For viewers drawn to grand romance and wartime stakes, even when the script doesn't quite earn them.

Chandni1989

The spiritual ancestor of this film: a romance where emotion overwhelms logic, set against exotic backdrops, with a hero whose intensity is as much liability as asset. Essential viewing if you loved Karthi's commitment here.

But It's slower-paced and relies on Yash Chopra's visual language rather than plot momentum. The gender dynamics will feel dated even by 1989 standards.

Raees2017

Same year, similar DNA: a romance tangled with action and moral ambiguity. Shah Rukh Khan brings the same uncompromising intensity to love and violence. Sharp, tense, and genuinely moving when it needs to be.

But It's a crime drama first and romance second, so if you came for the love story, you'll spend half the runtime on narcotics.

Rustom2016

A military officer, a passionate marriage, and the question of whether you can really know the person you love. Courtroom drama with emotional weight and strong performances. Moves at a clip.

But The romance gets sidelined for procedural elements. Less visually ambitious than Kaatru Veliyidai, and the resolution is neat rather than devastating.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Commando - A One Man Army2013

Both films are haunted by the question of whether you can love someone while serving something larger than yourself, but Commando doesn't pause to ask—it just runs.

An Indian action thriller where the soldier protagonist's personal mission mirrors the military one—he's trying to save a woman while preventing a terrorist attack. Same thematic collision of duty and desire, but filtered through pure genre entertainment: explosions, chases, practical action instead of romantic speeches.

But It's a B-movie in the best and worst senses. The plot is bonkers and the romance is perfunctory. If you need craft and subtlety, this trades both for fun.

Maidaan2024

A sports drama that understands how ambition and personal relationships can't coexist without sacrifice. Ajay Devgn gives a performance of genuine restraint. Quietly moving.

But It's not a romance at all, really—the marriage is a subplot. Very slow burn. If you need the love story front and center, this won't deliver.

Rang De Basanti2006

Young people in love, caught up in something bigger than themselves. The chemistry between leads crackles, the idealism feels earned, and it balances romance with political stakes without losing either.

But It's an ensemble piece, so no character gets the full focus a two-hour romance needs. Some sequences feel manipulative on rewatches.

Ek Villain2014

A dark, propulsive take on passion and obsession. Shraddha Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra create genuine electricity. The film doesn't apologize for its characters' flaws, which makes it morally interesting.

But It trades in melodrama and contrivance. The plot logic frays if you think about it, and the climax feels designed to wound rather than satisfy.

Highway2014

An unconventional romance between two strangers on the road, built on vulnerability rather than grand gestures. Alia Bhatt is luminous. A genuinely risky film that trusts its actors.

But It's deliberately small and intimate, which will feel anticlimactic if you're expecting action or narrative sweep. Some viewers find it uncomfortable.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan2012

Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif in a romance where military service and devotion to duty genuinely compete with love. Yash Chopra's last film, visually gorgeous, with real emotional stakes.

But It's three and a half hours, and pacing was not Chopra's strength by 2012. The second half meanders, and you'll watch a lot of beauty for fairly simple emotional beats.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan poster

Aashiqui 22013

A romance where both people are flawed and self-destructive. Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor feel painfully real together. The film respects that love doesn't always lead anywhere happy.

But It's bleak, sometimes to the point of being punishing. The second half is genuinely depressing, which some viewers experience as overwrought rather than moving.
