Bade Miyan Chote Miyan
Other titles called Bade Miyan Chote Miyan: the 2024 film.
- Police procedural
- Light-hearted
A '90s Bollywood action-comedy pairing two feuding cops who get framed by their criminal doppelgangers. Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda trade quips and punches across two-and-a-half hours of elaborate stunts, slapstick, and romantic detours. It's broad, energetic, utterly sincere about its absurdities, and made for audiences who want their action films to be fun first.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love loud, unembarrassed 1990s masala cinema where slapstick, big stunts and a flamboyant villain are the whole point, and a buddy comedy about two mismatched cops can carry a three-hour-feeling spectacle.
Skip it if you want restraint or a tight, plausible plot, since this runs a little under two and a half hours and leans hard into broad physical comedy, melodrama and song-driven excess.
What it asks of you: It asks you to settle in for a long, busy ride that swings between goofy comic bits and bombastic action, with little pause for quiet and a willingness to let the absurdity wash over you.

Sholay1975
The template for everything that followed: buddy cops, witty banter, betrayal, action set pieces that still impress. A genuine masterpiece that earned its immortality.
But It's a 3.5-hour slow burn by modern standards. The romance subplot stops the plot dead.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995
Shahrukh and Kajol define '90s Bollywood romance: funny, earnest, gorgeously shot across Europe. Even if you don't love romance, the charm is undeniable.
But The sexual politics are dated and unchallenged. It's long and the father's rigidity goes unexamined.

Andaz Apna Apna1994
Two con-artists competing for the same heiress. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan play it as pure farce—inspired chaos, quotable absurdism, genuine laughs throughout.
But The humour is loud and scattered. It doesn't land if slapstick and non-sequiturs feel juvenile to you.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Jai Bhim2021
Both films feature cops as protagonists, but where Bade Miyan Chote Miyan plays cops as clowns, Jai Bhim shows the apparatus they serve. Same genre muscle, opposite moral purpose.
Suriya and Lijomol Jose in a legal thriller about caste violence and police brutality in Tamil Nadu. Furious, formally precise, and gutting—made by someone who learned action grammar from Bollywood but weaponized it for truth.
But It's nearly three hours of accumulated rage. The subject matter involves torture and death. Not cathartic—just necessary.

Hera Pheri2000
Suniel Shetty, Tabu, and Akshay Kumar in a con-artist caper: clever writing, chemistry that crackles, plot twists that actually work. Comedy thriller done right.
But The gender politics are dodgy and the climax feels rushed. Some dated attitudes sneak in.

Khuda Haafiz2020
Vidyut Jammwal and Shivaleeka Oberoi in a raw, modern action film about human trafficking. Visceral fights, genuine emotional stakes, no apologies.
But It's relentlessly dark and the subject matter is harrowing. There's no levity and the violence is graphic.

Commando - A One Man Army2013
Vidyut Jammwal's debut: kinetic action choreography, minimal plot (a bonus), and a lead who treats stunts like ballet. Proof that Bollywood action could be stylish.
But The story is gossamer-thin and the acting is perfunctory. You're there purely for the action.

Singh Is Kinng2008
Akshay Kumar in Australia, fighting crime and looking handsome. Slick, confident, entertaining—a template for star vehicles that actually works.
But The plot is incidental and the character doesn't develop. It's all surface, all the time.

Special 262013
Both pivot on impersonation and mistaken identity, but this one treats those elements as the entire plot rather than a setup for action.
Akshay Kumar and Rajiv Khandelwal as con-artists who rob banks by posing as CBI agents. Twisty, smart, genuinely suspenseful—a heist film disguised as a cop film.
But It's cerebral where Bade Miyan is kinetic. If you want spectacle over smarts, this will feel thin.

A Prophet2009
Both are buddy films about men defined by circumstance—but where Bachchan and Govinda are framed by criminals, this film asks whether the prison system and its inhabitants are functionally identical.
A Corsican man imprisoned in a French jail rises through gang hierarchy via cunning and ruthlessness. Lean, observant, thrillingly tense—French cinema's answer to the gangster epic.
But It's in French with subtitles, deliberately paced, and morally ambiguous. Zero sentiment, zero comedy, zero relief.
