Haathkadi
Haathkadi is a 1995 Hindi action-comedy about a cop wrongly imprisoned for murder, forced to partner with a convict to expose the real killers. It's a breezy masala film that bounces between action sequences and comic relief, built on the chemistry between Govinda and Rajinikanth. Perfect if you want 90s Bollywood fun without overthinking it.

Andaz Apna Apna1994
Two incompetent con artists scheme their way through Mumbai in this endlessly quotable comedy. The anarchic energy and chemistry between the leads captures the same spirit of chaotic fun that makes Haathkadi so entertaining.
But The humour is very broad and the plot barely holds together—if you prefer coherent narratives, this will test your patience.

Khuda Gawah1992
Amitabh and Sunny Deol deliver an action-packed revenge saga across Afghanistan with the same blend of melodrama and spectacle. It has that grand 90s energy where emotions run high and stunts run wild.
But It's over three hours long and the subtitles struggle to keep up with the cheesy one-liners. The pacing can drag between action beats.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan1998
Amitabh and Govinda team up for an action-comedy about cops hunting terrorists. Same DNA as Haathkadi: witty banter, car chases, impossible stunts, and two leads who genuinely seem to be having fun together.
But The plot is basically an excuse for comedy sketches. If you need a tight story, the constant derailing will frustrate you.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Sholay1975
Direct ancestor—Haathkadi is essentially Sholay remixed for the 90s masala market, inheriting its buddy-cop structure and revenge-across-the-country narrative but swapping gravitas for jokes.
The godfather of Hindi action cinema: a cop film about two men hunting outlaws across the desert. Haathkadi owes everything to Sholay's DNA—the buddy pairing, the wronged heroes, the revenge plot—but Sholay does it with mythic weight and direction that elevates formula into art.
But It's nearly three and a half hours, shot in 1975 format and pacing. Modern viewers often find it slow-burn, and if you want quick thrills, its deliberateness will test you.

Hera Pheri2000
Three everyday guys stumble into a kidnapping scheme in this crackerjack comedy-thriller. The humour is sharper than Haathkadi's and the buddy dynamic between the leads is genuinely heartfelt underneath the chaos.
But It relies heavily on slapstick and physical comedy that can feel dated. The film assumes you'll accept increasingly absurd plot developments without explanation.

Dil Hai Betaab1993
Govinda himself in a romance-action film where charm and physicality compensate for a threadbare plot. If you enjoyed his presence in Haathkadi, this shows him at full manic energy.
But The romantic subplot is clichéd and drags the momentum. Govinda's over-the-top delivery works better in ensemble films than carrying a movie solo.

Rangeela1995
A spirited romantic comedy about a film extra falling for an actress. It shares Haathkadi's 1995 vintage charm, a relaxed attitude toward plot logic, and genuine warmth beneath the spectacle.
But It's primarily a romance, so if you're specifically after action and thrills, the softer tone will feel like a step down.

Judwaa1997
Salman Khan as separated twins—one good, one bad—delivers the same kind of high-energy, plot-light entertainment. It's pure product: absurd, enthusiastic, impossible to take seriously, and weirdly winning because of it.
But The film is almost proud of how little narrative sense it makes. If you need your entertainment to be plausible, this will exhaust you.

Dilwale1994
Ajay Devgn and Suniel Shetty in a buddy-cop action film with laughs and stunts. It has the same casual approach to logic and genuine affection between the leads that gives Haathkadi its warmth.
But The film feels like a first draft—scenes don't always connect, dialogue repeats, and the climax rushes in suddenly. It's rough in ways that even enthusiasts struggle to defend.

Nayakan1987
Both films feature prisoners as central figures and prison as a crucible, but where Haathkadi treats jail as a plot device, Nayakan sees it as tragedy—the same setting, completely opposite register.
A Tamil gangster epic about a man rising from prison to power—bleak, operatic, and visually stunning. It explores the same criminal underworld as Haathkadi but with aesthetic ambition and moral seriousness that transforms the material entirely.
But It's slow, violent, and deeply sad. There's no comic relief; if you're expecting Haathkadi's lightness, this will feel like a different language entirely.

Insomnia2002
Both pivot on a cop wrongly accused or compromised, but where Haathkadi resolves this in fun, Insomnia explores it as tragedy—same premise, opposite emotional destination, showing what the genre looks like when played for existential stakes.
Al Pacino as a cop in Alaska whose moral authority collapses during an impossible case. It's a procedural about guilt and corruption that uses the cop genre to ask harder questions than Haathkadi ever attempts—it's what happens when you take the cop's inner life seriously.
But It's slow, introspective, and American. If you want action and spectacle, this will feel austere and punishing. The psychological approach can feel remote.
