Dilwale
Other titles called Dilwale: the 2015 film.
A 1994 Bollywood actioner where a wronged man's descent into madness and asylum becomes the crucible for an unlikely bond with an honest cop. Three hours of melodrama, romance, and action sequences in the Hindi masala style—big-hearted, shameless, and built for an audience that loves moral clarity and emotional stakes cranked to eleven.

Khal Nayak1993
Suniel Shetty as the charismatic antagonist opposite Madhuri Dixit; a crime thriller with the same operatic energy and a protagonist-versus-system dynamic that rewards emotional investment over logic.
But Runs nearly three hours, and the plot mechanics creak audibly. Some viewers will find the tone frustratingly uneven.

Dushman1998
Ajay Devgn in a revenge thriller with real bite—betrayal, obsession, and a man broken by injustice. The action is brutal and the emotional throughline is genuinely earned, not just asserted.
But Darker and grimmer than Dilwale, with less romance. If you're coming for the masala sweetness, this will feel like a different film.

Chandni1989
Raveena Tandon's earlier breakout role; a romantic drama with the same sweeping sentiment and romance-amid-chaos sensibility, built around an unforgettable Yash Chopra aesthetic.
But The romance dominates over action. If the plot mechanics of Dilwale appeal more than the love story, this will feel misdirected.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Sholay1975
Dilwale absorbs Sholay's DNA—the buddy dynamic, the rescue mission, the moral clarity—but Sholay invented the language. Watching it illuminates how Dilwale uses the same grammar to different emotional ends.
The template for everything Dilwale inherits: two men (one a cop, one a criminal) bound by code and friendship, set against a landscape of injustice and revenge. Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra in the platonic relationship that defines 1970s-90s Bollywood.
But At nearly two-and-a-half hours, it moves at a Western film's pace. The print quality is poor on many versions, and the genre's conventions will feel alien to anyone raised on faster editing.

Karz1980
Rajesh Khanna in a revenge-reincarnation thriller that pairs justice with the supernatural; that same theatrical commitment to emotion and spectacle, but with a genuinely clever premise underneath.
But The tone is uneven—it commits to magic and mysticism in ways that feel incongruous with the crime plot. Some viewers find it dated.

Parinda1989
A gritty crime drama with real narrative muscle; brotherhood, corruption, and moral compromise without the melodrama sugar. Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff earn every frame of tension.
But The mood is bleak and unflinching. If you come for the romantic warmth of Dilwale, this will feel like a punch in the stomach.

Ram Lakhan1989
Two brothers, duty, corruption, and spectacle; Jackie Shroff and Sunny Deol in an action-melodrama with the same commitment to stakes and righteous anger, but with more comedy balancing the heavy stuff.
But The script is uneven. The film loses focus at the midpoint, and some jokes undercut the tension deliberately.

Jai Bhim2021
Both centre on an innocent man destroyed by authority, but where Dilwale treats this as melodrama to be resolved through heroism, Jai Bhim treats it as structural tragedy to be survived. One is Bollywood's faith in the good cop; the other is the good cop fighting a machine designed to crush him.
A Tamil-language legal drama where a wronged man's fight for justice becomes a broader indictment of systemic cruelty. Suriya gives a performance of crushing quiet; the rage is structural, not theatrical. Justice earned feels like a miracle.
But It is genuinely bleak and unflinching about police brutality and caste violence. Watching it is painful. It has no romance, no spectacle, no cathartic action sequences—only the slow grinding of law.
