Dulhe Raja

A 1998 Bollywood romantic comedy where a scrappy fast-food vendor outwits a snobbish hotel mogul, wins his daughter's heart, and rockets to riches—only for her to elope with someone else. It's pure masala: broad jokes, rapid-fire plot turns, and Govinda's elastic physical comedy. Catnip for fans of '90s Hindi cinema's anything-goes energy.

Hera Pheri2000

Govinda himself, paired with Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal, in a heist comedy that finds genuine laughs in confusion and misunderstanding. Same era, same spirit, better jokes.

But The plot is deliberately absurd and rarely makes sense, which some find tedious rather than funny.

Judwaa1997

Salman Khan as twin brothers, a poor man and a rich one, navigating romance and class differences. Captures the same '90s irreverence, with a stronger romantic arc and more inventive physical comedy.

But It's 155 minutes of pure indulgence. The film stops for songs, comedy, fights, and romance with no apology for bloat.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan1998

Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda as mismatched heroes fighting terrorists and falling for the same woman. Absurdist, chaotic, wonderfully dumb in the best way.

But The logic evaporates entirely by the second act. You have to surrender your brain or get very frustrated.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Chashme Buddoor1981

Both films build their comedy on deception and disguise, with the hero outsmarting a more powerful antagonist through wit rather than force. This is where that tradition began.

A pre-VCR era Bollywood comedy about con artists, misunderstanding, and romance that invented half the tricks Dulhe Raja uses. Watching it is like seeing the DNA unfold. Hilarious on its own terms, revelatory as context.

But The print is grainy, the pacing is slower, and the humor feels theatrical and broad. It's harder to find and takes patience to appreciate.

Raja Babu1994

Govinda again, this time as a wealthy simpleton pretending to be poor to win a woman's love. The role plays to his strengths: physical comedy, a boyish charm, and an ability to make pratfalls feel joyful.

But The gender dynamics are pretty rough. The film doesn't question some of its own attitudes, which can make it uncomfortable to modern viewers.

Andaz Apna Apna1994

Aamir Khan and Salman Khan as competing con men after the same heiress. It's anarchic, quotable, and genuinely inventive in its comedy—probably the best pure comedy of the era.

But The print quality on most versions is poor, and some of the humor relies on cultural references that don't travel.

Shola Aur Shabnam1992

Govinda and Madhuri Dixit as a thief and a runaway bride. The chemistry is electric, the romance actually lands, and Govinda's comedy never overwhelms the story.

But It's a little gentler than Dulhe Raja, so if you're specifically craving pure chaos, this will feel like a letdown.

The Gay Divorcee1934

A Govinda romantic comedy from the same year, with similar energy and stakes. If you want more of the same without overthinking it, this delivers.

But It's filler. Better versions of this story exist, and the film doesn't add anything new to the formula.

Khosla Ka Ghosla!2006

Both pit a self-made ordinary man against an arrogant powerful figure, but where Dulhe Raja plays it as fantasy, Khosla Ka Ghosla grounds it in recognizable injustice. Same battle, different register.

A sharp-toned comedy about a middle-class family fighting a corrupt real-estate developer—same class struggle as Dulhe Raja, but played with genuine anger under the jokes. It proves the premise still works when you mean it.

But It's a comedy that actually thinks about its moral questions. If you want pure escapism without subtext, the earnestness will feel like a downer.
