Raja Babu

Raja Babu is a chaotic 1994 Bollywood comedy about a wealthy, spoiled rural heir who gets knocked down several pegs when rejected by the woman he loves and then learns he's adopted. It's broad, energetic slapstick with genuine heart underneath—the kind of film that swings wildly between ridiculous and touching, held together by Govinda's physical comedy and an ensemble cast having obvious fun.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a broad, big-hearted Bollywood comedy of 1990s excess, where slapstick, song and sentiment arrive in equal measure and Govinda's rubbery physical clowning carries the whole thing.

Skip it if you find romantic comedies with loud farce and exaggerated melodrama wearing thin, since this one leans hard into both and rarely lets its tone settle.

What it asks of you: Roughly two hours and forty minutes of patience, with mood swinging from giddy farce to heavy sentiment, so ride the tonal swings rather than hunt for consistency.

Hera Pheri2000

Similar ensemble comedy energy with Govinda and Paresh Rawal as lovable con artists. Sharper script, better pacing, but the same chaos-with-a-heart formula and genuinely inventive comic set pieces.

But If you want plot coherence over laughs, you'll find both films equally bewildering. The humour is very much of its era and region.

Judwaa1997

Govinda in peak form playing twins with completely different personalities. Absurd premise executed with infectious energy, romance subplot that actually lands, and physical comedy that shows off what made him a star.

But The second half sags, the romance feels obligatory, and it's nearly three hours long. Some of the humour relies on broad stereotypes.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan1998

Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan as mismatched cop partners—the dynamic between them is effortlessly funny, the action sequences are genuinely entertaining, and it juggles comedy and stakes better than most.

But By 1998 standards it's already dated, the plot is thin, and the second half leans hard into action at the expense of laughs.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Chandni1989

Both films feature wealthy men transformed by love and rejection, but Chandni takes the emotional stakes seriously where Raja Babu deflates them with jokes. One's the tragedy, one's the comedy—they're responses to each other.

The template for romantic melodrama that Raja Babu's romance subplot is trying to echo, but from the opposite end—lavish, tragic, absolutely serious. Shows the complete other half of what Govinda's world is responding to and subverting.

But It's a slow, deeply sad love story in three acts with almost no comedy. If you want entertainment, this demands patience and accepts heartbreak.

Aankhen1993

Govinda in a different register—still funny but sharper, more romantic, with better production values. Shows he could do more than just slapstick while keeping the warmth intact.

But If you want the full chaos energy of Raja Babu, this will feel restrained. It's more conventional in structure.

Andaz Apna Apna1994

Released the same year, this ensemble comedy with Aamir Khan and Salman Khan has similar chaotic energy but tighter writing. Genuinely quotable, genuinely inventive, and the chemistry between leads is effortless.

But It's still very much a product of mid-90s Bollywood comedy—the pacing can feel slack and some gags outstay their welcome.

Dulhe Raja1998

Govinda and Karisma Kapoor (who's also in Raja Babu) reunited in another broad comedy. Similar formula but with slightly better structure and a solid supporting cast including Kader Khan again.

But It's essentially a retread of the same formula. If you've seen Raja Babu, you've basically seen this already.

Mast1999

Govinda in a love story that's shot beautifully and takes itself seriously in ways his comedies don't. Shows his range and the sincerity underneath the slapstick. Raveena Tandon is excellent.

But If you're here for comedy, this will disappoint—it's a straight romantic drama. The melodrama doesn't always land and the film is somewhat uneven.

Natrang2010

Both films are about men who use comedy and performance to avoid real feeling, but Natarang interrogates that instead of celebrating it. It's the art-film answer to Raja Babu's entertainment—same DNA, completely different register.

A Marathi-language film about an aging man who becomes obsessed with an old theatrical tradition, played with total commitment and surprising depth. It's slapstick that matters, chaos with genuine weight underneath. The lead is a revelation.

But It's in Marathi with subtitles. It's darker and sadder than it appears. The commitment to the bit is so complete it can feel uncomfortable, and the ending is melancholy, not cathartic.
