Agneepath

Other titles called Agneepath: the 2012 film.

Amitabh Bachchan returns as the grown son of a lynched man, now a street fighter and criminal enforcer seeking vengeance in Bombay's underworld. This is masala action cinema at its most operatic—furious, stylish, and entirely committed to melodrama. It's for anyone who loves Bachchan and doesn't mind their revenge served scalding hot, with elaborate fight choreography and moral ambiguity set aside.

Sholay1975

The template for Hindi action cinema: two criminals with codes of honour, stunning set pieces, and a villain so magnetic you understand why audiences fell in love with Bachchan in the first place.

But It's 16 minutes longer and moves at a different pace—more patient, less frantic than Agneepath's relentless momentum.

Tezaab1988

Ajay Devgn's debut showcases the same era's appetite for young men fighting their way up from nothing. Energetic, stylish, and genuinely entertaining action cinema.

But The plot is thinner and the emotional core less developed than Agneepath's setup.

Rambo: First Blood Part II1985

The same year's Western equivalent: a wronged soldier returning to settle scores, with spectacle and righteous fury driving every sequence. Stylistically different but spiritually close.

But Stallone's film is more propagandistic and less interested in its protagonist's moral cost.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Man Push Cart2006

Both are studies of how a man becomes what the world forces him to be; Agneepath externalizes it as violence, Man Push Cart internalizes it as erosion.

An Afghan immigrant in New York survives by hauling a coffee cart through pre-dawn streets. Stripped of all melodrama, it's a portrait of daily humiliation and invisibility—the opposite of Agneepath's operatic rage, but the same engine underneath: a man clawing for dignity in a system that won't grant it.

But It's a slow, unglamorous realist film with no plot arc, musical swells, or moments of triumph. If you came for action, you'll find only the action of surviving.

The Godfather1972

The ultimate revenge narrative with a criminal underworld: carefully structured, morally corrosive, and hypnotic. Shows what happens when you map crime family drama onto personal vendetta.

But It's American, methodical, and glacial compared to Agneepath's heat. Also three hours and demands your full attention.

Once Upon a Time in America1984

Sergio Leone's masterpiece follows a man's rise through organized crime shadowed by childhood trauma and betrayal. Visual poetry meets underworld grit.

But It's in Italian, deliberately paced, and arrives at a spiritual place far removed from action-film catharsis.

Deewaar1975

Bachchan opposite Rajesh Khanna in Yash Chopra's meditation on class, crime, and family fracture. A masterwork that influenced everything that followed, including Agneepath.

But It's a family drama first, action film second. The violence is incidental to the wound at its centre.

Sarkar2005

Ram Gopal Varma's update on the Godfather template, with Amitabh in a silver-haired kingpin role. Proof the actor's authority only deepened over fifteen years.

But The film is self-conscious and fragmented. It's trying to be contemporary in ways that haven't aged well.

Kaante2002

A heist film folded into crime-world machinery, with strong ensemble work. Shows how the template evolved and what directors could do with Bollywood's crime-film grammar.

But It's a stylistic exercise that values cool over emotional truth, and some sequences strain credibility.

Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 12012

Same emotional architecture—a man's rage inherited or self-forged—but told with a modern eye that questions whether vengeance means anything.

Anurag Kashyap's five-hour crime saga unfolds across generations and geographies, following a family's vendetta with Shakespearean scope. It's Agneepath's DNA rewritten for the multiplex age—the same blood-debt logic, but darker, funnier, more fractured.

But It's genuinely brutal in a way that doesn't cater to fantasy. Also wildly digressive and requires real stamina.

The Last Duel2021

Both films are fascinated by how a man's need to be avenged can drive every choice—but Scott questions whether that need is wisdom or sickness.

Ridley Scott's medieval justice tale: a wronged man demanding combat to settle honour, framed by a crime that asks whether justice and revenge are even the same thing. Gorgeously mounted, morally complex, and surprisingly intimate about masculine rage.

But It's nearly three hours, visually austere by action standards, and arrives at unsettling conclusions about whether the duel solves anything.
