Tezaab
Tezaab is a revenge thriller that made Anil Kapoor a superstar and Madhuri Dixit a household name. It's operatic, energetic, and utterly committed to its melodrama—a film that finds genuine emotion in its big moments while delivering the spectacle audiences craved. Essential viewing for understanding 1980s Hindi cinema.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love old-school Hindi melodrama with big musical set pieces, a hero driven by wounded pride, and a revenge story played at full operatic volume.
Skip it if you want restraint, subtlety or a brisk runtime; at nearly three hours with heavy sentiment and loud performances, it asks a lot of patience.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, emotionally heightened ride where the mood swings hard between tenderness and fury, and where big songs and dramatic confrontations take up real space.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995
The spiritual successor to Tezaab's blend of romance and action, with similarly charismatic leads and the same commitment to making love feel urgent and worth fighting for. A generational touchstone.
But It's nearly three hours, and the pacing reflects an era before the internet demanded constant momentum. Some find it overwrought.

Khal Nayak1993
Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit reteam for another revenge-tinged thriller with the same operatic energy and a villain you genuinely believe deserves what he gets. The Choli Ke Peeche number alone justifies the watch.
But The plot contortions are sometimes baffling, and some scenes rely on dated action conventions that don't age gracefully.

Parinda1989
Made just after Tezaab, this crime drama has similar emotional stakes but trades melodrama for grit. It's the film that proved the 80s could do serious, and it features some of Hindi cinema's best work on themes of loyalty and corruption.
But It's darker and more cynical than Tezaab—if you want catharsis, this offers complexity instead. Some viewers find that unsatisfying.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Naam1986
Both follow men whose lives are ruined by circumstance and violence, then trace their path to reclamation. Where Tezaab uses melodrama and romance, Naam uses silence and stillness to arrive at the same emotional truth.
Kumar Sanu's only film role, playing a small-town boy swept into crime by circumstance. It has Tezaab's moral urgency—good man corrupted—but is told with documentary-like realism instead of spectacle. Absolutely hypnotic, and criminally underseen.
But It's a slow-burn in an era of fast cuts. The pacing will test you if you expect Tezaab's immediate gratification.

Chandni1989
Another Madhuri triumph, this time a romantic drama that showcases her dancing and acting with equal grace. It has Tezaab's visual flair but operates as pure romance, making it the perfect companion piece.
But The romantic plot is fairly straightforward, and if you're in the mood for conflict and stakes, the softness might feel slight.

Ram Lakhan1989
Anil Kapoor in perhaps his most charismatic role, paired with Jackie Shroff in a film about brotherhood, revenge, and justice. It has the same outsized energy as Tezaab but channels it toward action and comedy.
But It's unapologetically silly in places, and the tonal shifts between comedy and violence are jarring by modern standards.

Karma1986
An ensemble drama about justice and retribution that predates Tezaab but shares its themes. The cast is stellar and the moral questions are more layered than the average action film of the era.
But With multiple storylines, it can feel scattered. Some threads don't land as satisfyingly as others.

Insaaf Ka Tarazu1980
A rape-revenge film that's a precursor to Tezaab's use of moral justification for violence. It's bracing and refuses to look away, dealing with themes many films dance around.
But The subject matter is heavy and traumatic. The film treats it seriously, which means it's sometimes difficult to watch. The execution is dated enough that some scenes feel exploitative by modern standards.

Jai Bhim2021
Both are revenge narratives that question whether individual justice can ever truly answer systemic wrong. Tezaab resolves this through spectacle; Jai Bhim refuses resolution altogether.
A Tamil-language courtroom drama about justice, caste, and systemic cruelty that channels the moral clarity of Tezaab into a real historical case. Suriya is magnetic, and the film earns every emotion it asks for.
But It's three hours, heavily subtitled, and the subject matter—police brutality and atrocities—is relentlessly grim. There are no lighter moments to breathe in.
