Television series
The Eddy
A glossy, music-soaked drama about an American jazz club owner in Paris trying to save his business and navigate complicated relationships with his estranged French-Algerian partner, his fractured band, and the city itself. It's a love letter to live music, to Paris, and to the mess of building something together. For people who want their stories seasoned with actual jazz.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you are drawn to music-driven drama where the rhythm of a live jazz set and the grit of a crowded city carry as much weight as the plot, and you like watching people argue, love and fail in the same breath.
Skip it if you want a tight, plot-forward thriller; this one lingers on mood, rehearsal-room tension and long conversations, so momentum arrives slowly and some viewers will find that patience wearing.
What it asks of you: Eight episodes of roughly an hour each, unhurried and often brooding, with long stretches of performance and quiet talk that reward you for paying close attention rather than half-watching.

High Fidelity2020
Zoe Kravitz runs a record shop and sorts through love, identity, and what matters. Like The Eddy, it's about creative people trying to keep something alive while their personal lives combust around them. Music as character.
But The fourth-wall breaking and rapid-fire pop-culture references can feel exhausting. Some find the protagonist's self-absorption grating no matter how charming Kravitz makes her.

Godless2017
A western built on character detail and moral complexity rather than gunfights. Like The Eddy, it finds drama in community, in competing loyalties, and in people trying to hold things together when everything's falling apart. Beautifully made and genuinely tense.
But Slow-burn pacing won't grab you if you need immediate gratification. The tone is grittier and more violent than you might expect.

Halt and Catch Fire2014
Four seasons of people creating something meaningful while their relationships fracture. The writing is exceptional, the performances are lived-in, and it captures that specific ache of ambition meeting reality. A masterclass in character work.
But Takes a while to find its footing in season one. If you're not interested in the personal stuff, the tech-world backdrop might feel dry.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Minari2021
Both are about outsiders trying to build something in a place that isn't quite home, and about community as the only real currency.
A Korean-American family trying to grow a farm in rural Arkansas. It's tender and specific, interested in how people love while wrestling with displacement, ambition, and what home actually means. Like The Eddy, it lives in the gap between cultures and in the small rituals that hold people together.
But Quiet and contemplative. If you need your drama to be propulsive or your moments to be clearly marked as Important, this will feel thin. Subtitled throughout.

A Prophet2009
A French prison drama with Tahar Rahim giving a magnetic performance. It shares The Eddy's interest in transformation, community within constraint, and the complex relationship between mentors and those they shape. Brilliantly constructed.
But Grim and claustrophobic. The violence is matter-of-fact rather than stylized, which some find harder to watch than spectacle.

Love, Death & Robots2019
An anthology series that shifts wildly in tone and genre—horror, sci-fi, comedy, romance. Each episode is a small jewel. Like The Eddy, it trusts the audience to move fluidly between moods and doesn't explain everything.
But Uneven by design. If you need consistency of tone or coherent worldbuilding, the anthology format will frustrate you. Some episodes are genuinely disturbing.

On My Block2018
Four teens navigate friendship, identity, and the weight of their environment in South LA. It balances humor with real stakes, community with isolation. The dialogue crackles and the ensemble cast has genuine chemistry.
But Some find the tonal shifts between comedy and serious moments jarring. Not for viewers who need their dramas to stay in one register.

Ramy2019
A Muslim-American millennial navigating faith, family, sex, and purpose in New Jersey. It's funny, awkward, and deeply humane. Like The Eddy, it's interested in people caught between worlds, and it doesn't resolve that tension with easy answers.
But Protagonist can be aggressively irritating. If you need to root for your lead, this might not be it. Religious content may feel unfamiliar.

Master of None2015
Aziz Ansari as a New York actor fumbling through relationships, career, and meaning. Witty and warm, with real emotional depth underneath. Each episode is a small, perfectly calibrated story about how people connect—or fail to.
But Some episodes feel more like sketch comedy than narrative drama. If you prefer plot-driven stories, the reflective, slice-of-life pacing may bore you.

The Last Dance2020
A documentary about the Chicago Bulls' final season with Jordan and Jackson. It's obsessive about the granular details of excellence and ego, about teams as fractured families trying to create something unrepeatable. Oddly moving.
But If you don't care about basketball, the jargon and the obsessive focus on stats will feel tedious. The hagiographic framing gets thick at times.

Phantom Thread2017
Both treat creative work as a relationship, and both understand that the people making art together are doing something intimate and potentially destructive.
Paul Thomas Anderson's oddly beautiful film about a fashion designer and his muse in 1950s London. It's about the dark tangle of creation and possession, and it moves like music—accumulation and variation rather than plot. Hypnotic and strange.
But Not a conventional story. The central relationship is unsettling and never fully resolved. If you need clarity about whether you should like the characters, this will frustrate you.
