This is the real Cardiff Electric — actual Apple engineers who tried to build a smartphone a decade too early, filmed years later reckoning with what they built and lost. Same ache, same faith in the work.

A documentary about real Silicon Valley visionaries who failed spectacularly and quietly shaped everything that came after. Painfully moving, and it makes HCF's fiction feel almost restrained.

But No plot to speak of, just interviews and old footage; if you need drama's shape rather than life's mess, this won't satisfy.

GLOW2017

Scrappy outsiders build something ridiculous and important in the 1980s, led by a mercurial visionary nobody quite trusts. Funnier and looser than HCF, but the same underdog heart.

But Wrestling comedy tone is a big swing from HCF's earnestness; three seasons only, cancelled before its natural end.

Silicon Valley2014

The satirical mirror to HCF's earnestness — same industry, same founder mythology, played entirely for laughs. Watching them back to back is like seeing the same decade from two different angles.

But Broad comedy where HCF is drama; if you want the emotional stakes to matter, this will feel deliberately shallow by comparison.

Swap PCs for hedge funds and you get the same engine — brilliant, damaged people locked in mutual obsession, building and destroying things to prove a point to each other.

But Glossier and more cynical, with less interest in the craft of building something and more in the war of egos.

A forgotten gem about the scientists building the atomic bomb — the same tension between world-changing work and the marriages it wrecks, with genuinely gorgeous period detail.

But Only two seasons before cancellation, and the subject matter is heavier and more morally fraught than HCF ever gets.

A different kitchen entirely, but the same chaotic, obsessive, family-shaped workplace energy — people who define themselves through the thing they make, whatever it costs them.

But Much more frantic in pace and style; the anxiety-inducing camerawork is a world away from HCF's steadier hand.

Super Pumped2022

The real-world version of HCF's founder myth — charismatic, reckless men building something the world didn't ask for, and the wreckage they leave behind. Sharp and quick.

But One season, based on a true story everyone already knows the ending to, and considerably less interested in its women characters.

Tucker: The Man and His Dream1988

Joe MacMillan's whole arc — the visionary outsider reverse-engineering his way past an industry giant — has a real precedent in Preston Tucker, and Coppola tells his true story with the same romantic faith in the underdog inventor.

Jeff Bridges plays a real 1940s carmaker who dared to challenge Detroit's big three, and lost beautifully. Handsome, hopeful, and much older than anything else on this list.

But Coppola's sincerity tips into sentimentality at times, and the true story's ending is never in doubt from the start.

Slings & Arrows2003

Swap computers for a theatre company and you get the same structure exactly: a small, underfunded creative team reinventing itself each season under a brilliant, unstable leader nobody can quite manage.

A Canadian backstage comedy-drama about a struggling Shakespeare festival, sharper and funnier than it sounds, with the same rhythm of ambition, ego and reinvention driving every season.

But Broadly comic where HCF is mostly serious, and deep in theatre-world jokes that land harder if you already love Shakespeare.
