Minx
Minx is a 1970s period comedy-drama about a scrappy feminist accidentally launching an erotic magazine for women. It's sharp-witted and earnest without being preachy, balancing genuine social commentary with genuine laughs. Perfect for anyone who loves character-driven shows that don't take themselves too seriously but mean what they say.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy period comedies that find real heart in scrappy, sharp-tongued office chaos, where a sly 1970s satire about who gets to define pleasure keeps the laughs coming without losing its point.
Skip it if you want a tight, plot-driven thriller or prefer your comedy cynical; this one runs on warmth and banter, and its half-hour episodes can feel more like a pleasant hangout than a story that grips.
What it asks of you: Thirty-minute episodes, eighteen in total across two seasons, so it's an easy binge that moves at a conversational pace and rewards you for settling into its ensemble.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel2017
A sharp, fast-talking comedy-drama about a woman finding her voice in 1950s New York. Like Minx, it's period-perfect and fueled by a protagonist's refusal to fit into her assigned role.
But The rapid-fire dialogue can feel exhausting, and the show sometimes mistakes busyness for depth. It ended abruptly after five seasons.

WKRP in Cincinnati1978
A warm ensemble comedy set inside a struggling radio station where misfits and idealists collide daily. Same era, same scrappy workplace energy, same affection for its characters' contradictions.
But It's genuinely dated in places, and some episodes are forgettable filler. The pacing is slower than modern TV, which some find meditative and others find slow.

Godless2017
A feminist western where a woman-run mining town must defend itself. It shares Minx's blend of playfulness and real stakes, with characters who are funny and flawed and trying to build something new.
But It's only one season, so there's little payoff to its slower build. The western setting won't appeal to everyone, and some dialogue feels modern despite the period setting.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Chewing Gum2015
Both are shows about women reclaiming sexuality and agency outside the systems designed to control them, with humor that never undermines the seriousness of the stakes. They refuse the binary between being funny and being feminist.
A semi-autobiographical British comedy about a young Black woman navigating desire, faith, and self-discovery in contemporary London. It has Minx's anarchic energy and genuine warmth alongside its feminism, plus a complete, satisfying arc across two seasons.
But It's rawer and cruder than Minx in its language and sexual content. The episodic structure means some stories resolve quickly while others feel unfinished, and the British setting and humor might not land universally.

Fleabag2016
A woman building her own life and business while breaking every social rule, narrating her own chaos. Flawless character writing, genuine stakes beneath the jokes, and a protagonist you root for despite everything.
But Only two seasons total—it's brief and ends definitively. Some find the fourth-wall breaking gimmicky rather than charming.

Halt and Catch Fire2014
Four flawed, brilliant people trying to build something revolutionary in the male-dominated tech boom of the 1980s. Like Minx, it takes its characters seriously while mining comedy from their actual clashes and growth.
But The first season is uneven while finding its footing. Some find the pacing glacial, especially in later seasons where it trades momentum for introspection.

Mrs. America2020
A miniseries about the women's liberation movement in the 1970s, centered on the fight over the Equal Rights Amendment. Same decade, overlapping cultural moment, but far more serious in register while still being engaging.
But It's dramatically heavy and sometimes plays as a civics lesson. The Phyllis Schlafly perspective may frustrate viewers wanting pure feminist catharsis.

Hacks2021
Two women of different generations collaborating, clashing, and teaching each other in a creative industry. Snappy writing, real female friendship despite friction, and genuine comedy alongside genuine stakes.
But It's darker and nastier in tone than Minx. The Las Vegas stand-up comedy setting won't engage everyone equally.

Love2016
A messy, funny show about modern relationships and self-discovery with an ensemble of flawed characters who feel alive. Same comedic warmth toward human contradiction as Minx, though in a contemporary setting.
But It's uneven across three seasons, and some episodes feel like filler. The humor skews crude, and the romantic plot can feel circular.

Feud2017
A limited series about two actresses at career crossroads, fighting and surviving in 1960s Hollywood. It's a tense, funny, character-focused period drama with real bite about women and power.
But It's darker and more cynical than Minx. Some find it overstuffed with Hollywood melodrama rather than human detail.

Moonlight2016
Both are stories about desire as an act of self-determination and resistance. Where Minx uses humor and 1970s chaos to reclaim female sexuality, Moonlight uses formal restraint and 2000s intimacy to honor Black queer interiority. Same engine, entirely different register.
A formally inventive, quietly devastating film about a Black queer man's life told in three chapters. It's tender and specific without being didactic, letting you feel the weight of desire, secrecy, and survival without explanation.
But It's a slow, meditative film that demands patience and rewards silence. There's minimal plot in the conventional sense, and the emotional impact is cumulative rather than cathartic.
