Nip/Tuck
Nip/Tuck is a scalpel-sharp drama about two plastic surgeons whose gleaming practice masks a rotting partnership and twisted personal lives. It's provocative, sexually charged, and occasionally nasty—the kind of show that swung for transgression and mostly connected. Ideal for viewers who want their prestige drama complicated, morally murky, and willing to shock.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like glossy, lurid melodrama that treats vanity and moral rot with a wink and a scalpel, and you don't mind a show that gets outrageous on purpose.
Skip it if you need subtle, slow-burn realism, because its shock value, sexual provocation and soapy plotting can feel relentless across six seasons and a hundred hour-long episodes.
What it asks of you: A long haul of around a hundred hour-long episodes, with stylized drama, frank nudity and sex, and a tone that swings between sleek and sordid from week to week.

Californication2007
Hank Moody's self-destruction mirrors the surgeons' decay, but filtered through comedy and the music industry. Same DNA: charismatic men cratering their own lives while the world watches. Ryan's character work is magnetic.
But The sexual content borders on exhausting, and the show often mistakes provocation for insight. It can feel juvenile in ways Nip/Tuck rarely does.

Succession2018
Three seasons of men who have everything and lose it anyway, set in a pressure cooker of ambition and toxicity. The emotional machinery is similar: success as a hollow achievement, loyalty as a weapon, family as quicksand.
But It's far colder and more literary than Nip/Tuck. There's less melodrama and more architecture, which some find frustrating rather than gripping.

Hannibal2013
A show about two men locked in a dance of codependency and manipulation, where beauty and horror coexist. It shares Nip/Tuck's obsession with surface versus reality, and its willingness to be genuinely disturbing beneath a veneer of sophistication.
But It's deliberately difficult and arch in a way that can feel pretentious. If you want clarity and catharsis, this deliberately withholds both.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Killing Zoe1993
Both examine the fantasy of intimacy—the idea that knowing someone's body or having access to their world equals genuine connection. Both end in devastation.
A 90-minute fever dream about connection and dissolution between a drifter, a junkie, and a beautiful woman. Same obsession with beauty and corruption, same sense of desire as a destructive force. Grimy, hypnotic, deeply weird.
But It's deliberately oblique and refuses conventional plot logic. If you need clarity or conventional character arcs, this will feel frustratingly abstract.

The Sopranos1999
The original prestige drama about capable men undone by their own nature. It created the template: moral ambiguity, formal brilliance, characters who can't escape themselves no matter how much they achieve.
But It's measured and slow in ways Nip/Tuck isn't. If you're here for constant turmoil and shock value, this will feel restrained.

Billions2016
Two brilliant men in eternal combat over power, money, and dominance. It has Nip/Tuck's energy and willingness to be trashy about it, while maintaining genuine stakes and character work underneath the spectacle.
But It prioritizes plot momentum over depth. Characters bend to serve story rather than the reverse, which can feel hollow on repeat viewing.

Six Feet Under2001
A family business run by fractured men, each episode wrestling with mortality and meaning. It's got Nip/Tuck's dark humor and its willingness to let characters be unlikeable while remaining tragic.
But The tone is more elegiac than provocative. If you're chasing shock value and sexual transgression, this is too measured.

Damages2007
A relationship between two women that mirrors the toxic codependency at Nip/Tuck's heart. Manipulative, beautiful, and built on a foundation of mutual destruction and need. Thrilling legal drama wrapped around a character study.
But The plot can feel convoluted, and the show is sometimes more interested in being clever than coherent. The backwards narrative structure isn't for everyone.

The Fall2013
A detective and killer locked in psychological communion, each reflecting the other's darkness. It's about beauty masking evil and the seduction of matching wits with someone brilliant and corrupt.
But It's slow-burn television. There are long stretches of atmosphere over action, and some find the pacing self-defeating.

Halt and Catch Fire2014
Four seasons tracing ambition, friendship, and the spaces between them. A show about making something beautiful and destroying yourself in the process, with genuine characters underneath all the striving.
But It's quiet for a drama about high stakes. The show trusts you to care without constant melodrama, which can feel slow if you need constant momentum.

Mulholland Drive2001
Both are obsessed with transformation and the performance of self. Both suggest that in a city built on surfaces, the self becomes whatever you can convince others to believe.
Lynch's meditation on ambition, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves. Two women in Los Angeles, one fantasy, one reality, neither sympathetic and both devastating. It's about surfaces and what corrupts beneath them—Nip/Tuck in dream logic.
But It's demanding and deliberately opaque. There's no conventional resolution, and the second half may frustrate as much as seduce you.
