The Astronaut Wives Club

A gleaming, vivid drama about the women married to NASA's Mercury Seven astronauts during the space race. It's soap-opera energy applied to real history: glamour, ambition, fear, and the peculiar pressures of watching your husband rocket into the sky on live television. For anyone who loves period drama with heart and doesn't mind a little melodrama in their history.

Mad Men2007

It shares the same eye for 1960s aesthetic and the tension between public performance and private desperation. Characters navigate rigid social hierarchies while chasing impossible dreams, dressed immaculately all the way.

But It's slower-paced and more interested in psychology than plot. If you want things to happen, you'll find long stretches of drinking and brooding frustrating.

Halt and Catch Fire2014

Another ensemble drama about driven people in a high-stakes competitive era, with equally strong attention to both the men and the women whose contributions were overlooked or undervalued. Gripping and smartly written.

But Demands patience. It builds momentum across seasons rather than delivering immediate payoffs, and some find the pacing glacial.

The Crown2016

Gorgeous period production that treats real historical women with seriousness and complexity. It knows how to make the private lives of public figures feel genuinely dramatic without resorting to cheap tricks.

But The early seasons lean heavily on interpretation and invented scenes. If you want strict historical accuracy, you'll spend the whole time fact-checking rather than enjoying.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Apollo 131995

Both tell the space race story, but from opposite angles. Apollo 13 is what was happening in space and mission control; Astronaut Wives Club is what was happening at home. Watch them together and you understand the full picture.

The most gripping account of an actual space mission. Nail-biting, perfectly made, and it gives you the technical and emotional context for what these wives were actually living through. A masterpiece.

But It's all about the mission and the men solving problems. There's almost no domestic life, which means you lose the intimate angle that makes Astronaut Wives Club special.

Hidden Figures2016

Tells the parallel story of brilliant women working behind the scenes of the space program. Smart, moving, and it has the same energy of women proving themselves in a world that wasn't built to let them.

But It's more straightforward narrative and less interested in domestic texture. You lose some of the soap-opera richness in exchange for clearer heroism.

Mrs. America2020

Another ensemble of smart women in the 1970s navigating power, politics, and identity. Beautifully shot, sharply written, and genuinely moving about the cost of conviction.

But Dense and sometimes heavy. It's about ideology and strategy, which means fewer moments of levity or release.

Mrs. America poster

Downton Abbey2010

Master class in balancing an ensemble across class lines and multiple storylines. Addictive, warm, and deeply satisfying about people managing obligation and desire.

But The period is earlier and the tone is cozier. If you want '60s sharpness and tension, this might feel a bit like comfort food rather than drama.

The Right Stuff1983

The definitive film account of the Mercury Seven astronauts themselves. Panoramic, ambitious, and genuinely thrilling. Watch it for the other side of the story your series is telling.

But Nearly four hours long and very male-focused. It's the men's adventure narrative, which makes the Wives Club's reframing even more interesting, but the film won't give you what you're looking for here.

The Right Stuff poster

Feud2017

Two-season anthology about famous women in conflict and collaboration. Season one especially has that perfect blend of glamour, psychology, and real historical stakes that Astronaut Wives Club nails.

But More darkly comic and less romantic about its period. The tone is sharper and less sympathetic to its characters.

Pan Am2011

Similar period, similar aesthetic, similar interest in beautiful women navigating a changing world. Has that same glossy-but-troubled feeling about the jet age and American optimism.

But It was cancelled after one season and feels incomplete. Also lighter in tone—if you want real stakes and consequences, this is more fluffy.

Bombshell2019

Both explore how women navigated institutions—NASA in one, Fox News in the other—where their value was tied to appearance and compliance. Both ask: what's the cost of that deal?

A sharp, restless drama about women in a male-dominated institution fighting for power and recognition. Like Astronaut Wives Club, it understands that being beautiful and accomplished in a men's world means constant calculation and performance.

But It's brutal in a way Astronaut Wives Club isn't. Less nostalgic, more angry. If you're watching for the glamour, this will dismantle it.
