Skip it if you want a film that pushes hard on the cruelty of segregation or stays with its hardship, since it leans toward uplift and handles its prejudice with a lighter, more crowd-pleasing touch.

What it asks of you: Just over two hours, paced like a classic Hollywood biopic, with a steady rhythm of office scenes and home life rather than sustained tension. It rewards patience with character more than with suspense.

But Broad slapstick comedy where Hidden Figures is dignified restraint; some will find the tonal whiplash too much.

But Turns inward into mental illness rather than outward into institutional struggle, a very different kind of drama.

An earlier Hollywood attempt to dramatize race in America, showing what the genre looked like before it learned to let its Black characters win.

A lush, devastating melodrama about a Black woman and her daughter navigating racial identity in an America that offers no clean triumphs, made decades before Hidden Figures' hopeful version of this history.

But Melodramatic, mournful, and deliberately unresolved — the opposite of a feel-good ending, with none of the space-race spectacle.
