Ron Howard's mission-control thriller is the crowd-pleasing flip side of First Man's austerity — same era, same stakes, but told with warmth, humour and a genuine sense of triumph against the odds.

But It's more conventional Hollywood heroism than psychological portrait — if you wanted First Man's ambiguity, this plays it comparatively straight.

The Right Stuff1983

The 1983 original ensemble epic about the Mercury Seven astronauts, all swagger and dark comedy where First Man is clenched and quiet — same history, opposite temperament, and just as good.

But Three hours long, broad where First Man is intimate, and its heroics can feel dated next to the newer film's skepticism.

Hidden Figures2016

Tells the same space race from the ground, through the Black women mathematicians NASA barely credited — a warmer, more hopeful companion piece that fills in exactly what First Man leaves out.

First Man restages Apollo footage as drama; this is the real footage, assembled from NASA's own reels and astronaut voiceover — the closest thing to seeing what Chazelle was actually reaching for.

Composed entirely from NASA's own 16mm footage and set to a hypnotic Brian Eno score, this documentary lets the astronauts narrate their own missions — the strangeness and wonder First Man dramatizes, straight from the source.

But No plot, no characters as such, just meditative real footage — patient viewing rewarded, but don't expect narrative momentum.

Gravity2013

Cuarón's technical marvel puts you inside a spacesuit with the same visceral, unbroken tension First Man brings to Gemini and Apollo — sheer physical dread in the vacuum of space.

But It's pure survival spectacle with almost no interiority or history — thrilling, but a different kind of film entirely.

Interstellar2014

Nolan's cosmic family drama shares First Man's obsession with fathers, distance and the emotional cost of leaving Earth, just scaled up into science fiction and wrapped in Hans Zimmer's roar.

But Three hours of grand theorizing and tearful monologues where First Man trusts silence — your tolerance for Nolan's sincerity will decide this one.

Whiplash2014

Chazelle's breakout film, made before First Man, about a drummer pushed past reason by an instructor's cruelty — same director's obsession with perfectionism and the cost of obsession, minus the rockets.

But It's brutal and claustrophobic in a totally different way — no history here, just one relentless, punishing relationship.

La La Land2016

Gosling and Chazelle reunite here in the total tonal opposite of First Man — bright, musical, romantic — proof of how differently the same actor and director can work together.

But A candy-colored musical romance with none of First Man's weight — go in expecting joy, not gravity.

Ad Astra2019

Brad Pitt's astronaut, chasing his own vanished father across the solar system, mirrors Armstrong's shut-down grief almost exactly — another quiet, interior space film about men who cannot speak.

But Slower and more meditative still, with a plot that thins out the further it travels from Earth.

October Sky1999

A gentler, small-town coming-of-age film about a boy building rockets to escape his father's coal-mine life — a hopeful, human-scaled prequel spirit to the space race First Man depicts from inside.

But It's a much softer, more conventionally uplifting film — the stakes are personal ambition, not survival or history.

Marriage Story2019

Strip away the spacecraft and First Man is a marriage movie about a man who withdraws into silence while his wife absorbs the fallout — Marriage Story is that same collapse, without the cover story of history.

Baumbach's unflinching divorce drama shares First Man's real subject — a marriage strained past its limit by one partner's emotional absence — told with the same handheld intimacy, minus any historical alibi.

But There's no moon landing to redeem the pain here — just two people hurting each other in an ordinary living room, which some will find harder to sit through.

A Grand Day Out1990

Same errand — a man builds a machine and flies to the moon — but here it's claymation, played for laughs, and the moon is made of cheese. Strip First Man's grief and dread away and this is what's left: pure, childlike wonder at the idea of going.

Wallace and Gromit build a rocket in the shed and fly to the Moon for cheese — a half-hour of stop-motion joy that treats the exact same journey First Man agonises over as an unambiguous delight.

But It's twenty-three minutes long and made for children — a genuine palate cleanser, not a substantial evening's watch on its own.
