The Right Stuff

Philip Kaufman's sprawling, swaggering account of the Mercury Seven turns test pilots and astronauts into American folk heroes, then quietly interrogates the myth it's building. Three hours of jet noise, press conferences, and marital strain, anchored by Sam Shepard's Chuck Yeager, the man who never went to space but defined the whole ethos. Funny, awestruck, occasionally cynical — for anyone who loves big old-fashioned Americana with a wink in its eye.

But Less humor, less Americana pageantry — it's a thriller, not an ensemble epic, and plays it much straighter.

Chazelle strips the heroics away and gives you Armstrong's grief and isolation instead, shot claustrophobically inside the capsules. The quietest, saddest version of this story.

But Deliberately withholds the triumph and the jokes — if you wanted more Right Stuff swagger, this is its opposite mood.

Same NASA, same era, but told from the women doing the math the pilots never saw — a warmer, more crowd-pleasing companion piece that fills in who else made the missions possible.

But Glossier and more conventional than Kaufman's film, with history smoothed into feel-good beats.

It's the same men and the same mythology, but told by their real, aged voices instead of actors — the quiet truth underneath the legend Right Stuff builds.

The actual Apollo astronauts, decades older, talking candidly about what it felt like — humility and wonder replacing the swagger, cut with staggering restored NASA footage.

But There's no plot, no jokes, no reenactment — just old men remembering, which can feel slow after three hours of Kaufman's momentum.

But It's about one man's unraveling, not a fraternity of pilots — colder and more tragic than Kaufman's ensemble warmth.

Small-town coming-of-age story about kids building rockets in the shadow of Sputnik — the same dream, shrunk down to a West Virginia backyard, sincere and unpretentious.

But Much lower stakes and a fair bit more sentimentality; this is comfort food next to Right Stuff's bravado.

An alternate-history series imagining the Soviets beat America to the moon, so the space race never stops — takes the competitive fire of Right Stuff and keeps it burning for decades.

But It's speculative fiction, not history, and demands a multi-season commitment to pay off.

But No characters to root for in the dramatic sense, no jokes, no arc — it's an experience, not a story.

This is the pre-Yeager version of the myth Right Stuff canonized — the test pilot fraternity as it saw itself, decades before Wolfe or Kaufman turned it into legend.

A stiff-upper-lip 1950s drama about test pilots at Edwards Air Force Base, shot on the actual runways — the swagger-versus-death culture Tom Wolfe later mythologized, captured while it was still current.

But Dated melodrama by modern standards, and it never leaves the atmosphere — no astronauts, just planes and nerve.

Same hardware, same isolation-in-a-tin-can tension, but the genre flips from triumphant Americana to B-movie dread — the mythology's dark, trashy mirror image.

A found-footage horror movie that hijacks the same moon-mission mythology and asks what if the right stuff simply wasn't enough — cheap, claustrophobic, and unexpectedly fun as a genre stunt.

But Reviews were brutal and the scares are mostly jump-cuts; it can feel disrespectful to the real history right after Kaufman's sincerity.
