Test Pilot
Test Pilot is a 1938 drama about a reckless aviator caught between the thrill of dangerous flying and the people who love him. It's a character study wrapped in adventure, anchored by magnetic performances from Clark Gable and Myrna Loy. Fast-paced and emotionally generous—a film about how ambition can corrode a life.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like old-Hollywood studio pictures where glamorous leads trade wisecracks while the machinery of danger hums in the background, and you don't mind a romance that takes its time.
Skip it if you need modern, immediate flight sequences, since the flying here carries the creaky studio trickery of its era and the romance often outweighs the danger.
What it asks of you: Nearly two hours with a leisurely build, settling in for a talky middle before the cockpit tension arrives; its tone shifts from banter to earnest.

Only Angels Have Wings1939
Howard Hawks's masterpiece about pilots and risk. Like Test Pilot, it finds romance and tragedy in the gap between duty and personal life, but with darker undertones and richer atmosphere.
But It's slower-paced than Test Pilot and requires patience with its ensemble structure. Some find Hawks's dialogue style affected.

The Right Stuff1983
A sweeping, modern take on the same obsession: men willing to die for flight. It has the scale and spectacle Test Pilot hinted at, plus the historical weight of real achievement behind every stunt.
But It's nearly three hours and jugggles so many storylines that no single character gets Test Pilot's focused intensity. Some sequences feel dated now.

Captains Courageous1937
Another Spencer Tracy gem from the same era, about redemption through hardship and masculine bonds. It has the same emotional directness and refusal to sentimentalize its men.
But It's very much a 1930s family film—treacly at moments. The maritime setting means none of the modern-world urgency Test Pilot carries.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Dunkirk2017
Both are films about men in the grip of flying, where the machine becomes a character and romance is what's sacrificed to the sky. But where Test Pilot is intimate, Dunkirk is immersive and chaotic.
Nolan's fragmented war film about pilots in combat. It captures the same sensory experience of flying—the terror, the addiction, the mathematics of survival—but from inside the cockpit instead of the test chamber. Structurally alien, emotionally true.
But It's deliberately disorienting, with time manipulation that requires active watching. If you want narrative clarity, this will frustrate you.

A Man Apart2003
A surprisingly intelligent thriller about obsession destroying a marriage. It mirrors Test Pilot's structure—addict, loving spouse, best friend, the inevitable reckoning—but transplanted to the narcotics world.
But It's a modern action film with all the expected violence and formula beats. Vin Diesel's charisma can't match the subtlety of Gable's performance.

The Big Sky1952
Howard Hawks again, but this time on a frontier odyssey. Same obsessive male friendships, same tension between adventure and domestic life, same refusal to make simple judgments.
But It's a Western, which might feel like a genre step sideways. The pacing is deliberate, almost meditative, which isn't for everyone.

Twelve O'Clock High1949
A WWII drama about a pilot commander pushed to the breaking point by impossible choices. It has Test Pilot's interest in how masculine codes of honour can become destructive.
But It's weightier and grittier than Test Pilot, with less romance and more existential dread. The black-and-white photography is bleak.

The Bridges of Madison County1995
Eastwood's meditation on love, duty, and the roads not taken. Quieter than Test Pilot, but it captures the same ache—two people pulled in opposite directions by circumstance and character.
But It's unabashedly romantic and melancholy. If you want action or momentum, this will feel static.

Fearless1993
Jeff Bridges plays a man changed by a plane crash, left unable to feel fear. It explores what happens when the thing that made you feel alive is no longer possible—a darker mirror of Test Pilot's premise.
But It's heavy-handed at points and the metaphysics get murky. Some will find it pretentious.

Always1989
Spielberg's romantic ghost story about a pilot who can't let go of the sky—or the woman he left behind. It's Test Pilot remade as magical realism, for better or worse.
But The tone is sentimental in ways Test Pilot carefully avoids. The special effects look dated and the logic sometimes doesn't hold.

La Strada1954
Both explore how love becomes complicity, and how loyalty to the wrong person can destroy you. But where Test Pilot appeals to your reason, Fellini appeals to your nightmares.
Fellini's haunting film about a woman bound to a brutal, charismatic drifter. It's Test Pilot's structure—dependent woman, selfish man, his best friend watching helplessly—but transported to post-war Italy and made mythic and devastating.
But It's in Italian and subtitled. It's also slower and more symbolic than you might expect—less plot, more atmosphere and dread. Genuinely difficult to watch in places.

The Last Vermeer2019
Both are character studies about male charisma and its cost to the people around them. But where Test Pilot is in the register of American melodrama, this is European intrigue dressed in period clothes.
A gem about a forger and a con man during WWII. It has Test Pilot's fascination with charming, reckless men and the people whose love enables their worst impulses. But it's a puzzle-box instead of a straight line.
But It's small and understated—you have to lean in. And it ends in a way some will find ambiguous or unsatisfying rather than dramatically resolved.
