Race is a handsome, old-fashioned biopic about Jesse Owens' rise from Ohio State to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where his gold medals quietly undercut Hitler's Aryan supremacy staging in real time. Stephan James carries it with restraint and grit; Jeremy Irons and Carice van Houten add moral shading as the politicians and propagandists circling the Games. Earnest, well-mounted, and played straight rather than searching for irony.

Race takes the 1936 regime dead seriously as a menace to be outrun; Jojo Rabbit takes the same regime and disarms it with ridicule — two ways of fighting the same ideology on film.

A satire about a boy in the Hitler Youth whose imaginary friend is a buffoonish Hitler — the same Nazi Germany Race treats with total solemnity, here mocked until it curdles into something moving.

But Its tonal whiplash — slapstick sliding into real horror — won't work for everyone, and some find the satire too cute for the subject.
