A sunny, big-hearted biopic about Michael 'Eddie' Edwards, the gloriously unqualified British ski jumper who talked his way into the 1988 Calgary Olympics on nerve alone. Taron Egerton plays him with goggle-eyed sincerity, Hugh Jackman supplies the gruff mentor swagger. It's pure crowd-pleaser: broad, warm, occasionally corny, and entirely unashamed of it.

The Jamaican bobsled team's run at the very same 1988 Calgary Games, told with the same warmth and comic uplift. If Eddie the Eagle worked for you, this is the sibling film you didn't know you needed.

But It fictionalises real events even more freely than Eddie the Eagle does, so don't take any of the specifics as gospel.

The gold standard underdog sports film: a kid with no talent, no size and no business on a football field, who makes it onto the field anyway through sheer bloody-minded persistence.

But It's earnest to the point of solemnity — there's none of Eddie the Eagle's comic lightness here.

But It's bleak, slow-burning and disturbing rather than uplifting — a genuinely difficult watch, not a feel-good one.

An earlier, more solemn British Olympic story — runners chasing glory against class and prejudice, with that famous Vangelis score turning every sprint into something mythic.
