Television series
Caught
Other titles called Caught: the 1949 film, the 1996 film.
Caught follows a Newfoundland drug smuggler fresh out of prison in 1978, attempting one final score to escape his past. It's a road-trip crime drama with genuine warmth beneath the heist machinery, grounded by Allan Hawco's weary charm and the show's affection for its supporting cast. For anyone who craves character-driven crime with regional texture and a hero you actually root for despite his choices.

Schitt's Creek2015
A fish-out-of-water comedy with surprising emotional depth and a cast that grows more lovable each season. Finds genuine pathos in failure and found family, just not in a grim way.
But The early episodes can feel sitcom-broad, and it takes time to find its voice. If you need immediate perfection, patience is required.

Ozark2017
A similarly structured descent into crime from a man trying to protect his family, anchored by Jason Bateman's controlled unravelling. Taut plotting and slow-burn character corruption.
But It sprawls across five seasons and occasionally repeats itself. The body count climbs in ways that can feel exhausting rather than earned.

Godless2017
A western miniseries about a town run by women where a fugitive drifts in. Visually stunning, morally complex, and interested in how people survive beyond the law's reach.
But Only one season, and some plot threads resolve too neatly. The ending can feel rushed after the meticulous worldbuilding.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Grey Fox1982
Both are period stories about men trying to outrun their nature through one final score, set against Canadian geography that becomes a character itself.
Richard Farnsworth plays an aging Canadian bank robber released after decades in prison, attempting one last job. It's a western-crime crossover that understands how crime is sometimes just a way of feeling alive.
But It moves slowly and won't appeal to anyone looking for heist excitement. The pacing is contemplative, almost elegiac.

Justified2010
A U.S. Marshal goes home to Kentucky to face his past in a series of masterfully constructed crime stories. Witty, violent, humane, with one of TV's greatest antagonists.
But The early seasons are better than the late ones. By season six, it's running on fumes and goodwill.

Hell or High Water2016
A heist film about two brothers robbing banks across Texas, pursued by an aging ranger. Lean, precise, unexpectedly moving about brotherhood and rural desperation.
But It's a guy movie about guys doing guy things. If you need female characters with interior lives, you won't find them here.

The Sopranos1999
The template for prestige crime drama: a criminal trying to hold his life together while therapy forces him to confront who he is. Darkly funny, often brutal, endlessly quotable.
But It's nearly 90 hours long and occasionally indulgent. Some episodes feel like they exist only to mark time.

Banshee2013
A con man assumes a small-town sheriff's identity and must actually become the hero the role demands. Lurid, brutal, and funnier than it has any right to be.
But It leans into exploitation for shock value rather than substance. Some viewers will find it gratuitously violent.

The Americans2013
Soviet spies posing as an American family in the Cold War, their marriage tested by duty and conscience. Tense, intimate, and one of the best final seasons ever made.
But It's very dark and sustained tension can feel exhausting. The paranoia never lifts, which some find thrilling and others find draining.

Sneaky Pete2015
A con man hides from his mob creditors in his estranged sister's life. Charming, clever, with genuine warmth under the scheming.
But It was cancelled after three seasons on a cliffhanger. If you hate unfinished stories, this will frustrate you.

Unbroken2014
Both explore how prison strips men down to their essence, and whether redemption is possible after the system has broken you. Both are interested in inner will as a practical survival tool.
Angelina Jolie directs this story of an Olympic runner shot down in WWII, surviving on a raft and in a prison camp. A survival story about resilience and the choice to forgive.
But It's a straight-ahead inspirational narrative that doesn't complicate its hero's goodness. If you resist uplift, it will feel saccharine.

A Prophet2009
Both examine how prison becomes a university of crime, and follow men who leave it determined to succeed outside the law. But where Caught keeps its heart, A Prophet trades it for ambition—a darkening mirror.
A young Arab imprisoned in a French jail rises to power through cunning and ruthlessness. Visceral and brilliantly constructed, with a protagonist whose moral bankruptcy is honest rather than romantic.
But It's in French with subtitles, and it's bleak in ways that offer no comfort. The protagonist becomes a figure of power but never of admiration.
