Tiny Times
A glittering Shanghai fable about four best friends navigating ambition, fashion, and adulthood. Visually sumptuous and occasionally chaotic, it celebrates female friendship and the dizzying thrill of chasing dreams in a competitive world. Unapologetically girly, earnest about loyalty, and worth it if you're game for melodrama wrapped in couture.

Clueless1995
Four talented women at the centre of their own world, navigating romance and friendship with wit and style. A comfort film that makes being surrounded by ambitious women look irresistible.
But Set in 1990s Beverly Hills rather than contemporary Shanghai; the comedy lands differently and the fashion references won't all register.

Crazy Rich Asians2018
Anchored by female friendship and visual glamour, it finds humour and heart in the tension between tradition and ambition. Celebratory about Asian culture and unashamed about spectacle.
But More mainstream comedy than melodrama; if you want emotional mess and complexity, it aims for lighter entertainment.

Sex and the City2008
Four women, fashion, Shanghai's cousin in Manhattan, relationships that go sideways. Captures the same era-specific luxury aesthetic and the intensity of female bonds tested by adulthood.
But The film version is bloated and sometimes creaky; the original series is better, but also a significant time commitment.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Millennium Actress2002
Both films wrap their female characters in visual spectacle while asking how much of yourself you surrender to ambition and beauty. Both are unafraid to be melodramatic about it.
An animated meditation on ambition, beauty, and the stories women tell themselves. Visually transportive and achingly honest about the cost of chasing dreams in a world that commodifies women.
But Animation might feel like the wrong register; the film is abstract and digressive, rewarding patience but withholding immediate gratification.

Working Girl1988
A woman using ambition and style to climb the ladder while keeping her friends close. Genuinely warm about female competition and alliance, with real stakes and an earned heart.
But It's set in the 1980s and moves at a slower pace; you have to care about the plot mechanics to stay with it.

Confessions2010
A Japanese film about female friendship tested by adulthood, guilt, and secrets. Gorgeously shot, morally complex, and devastating in ways that feel earned rather than imposed.
But It's a thriller, not a friendship drama, and much darker; the tone whips around in ways that might feel manipulative.

Bridesmaids2011
Female friendship at the centre, comedy that comes from character rather than jokes, and a willingness to let women be flawed, messy, and real. Warm without being sentimental.
But American comedy sensibility; broader and less visually precious than what you're getting into here.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants2005
Four friends, adulthood looming, each one navigating her own dream and heartbreak. Earnest about the power of female bonds and the bittersweet cost of growing up.
But Distributed across separate storylines; if you want the group together, you'll be frustrated by the split focus.

Marie Antoinette2006
Sophia Coppola's fever dream of fashion, ambition, and female friendship at the centre of the frame. Visual luxury as a language, and genuine affection for girls trying to navigate impossible circumstances.
But Deliberately artificial and slow; if you want plot momentum and emotional clarity, the style gets in the way.

Girls Trip2017
Women at the centre, unafraid of mess and joy in equal measure. Fun without condescension, and genuinely invested in the bonds between the leads.
But Broader comedy than Tiny Times; the tone and register are quite different despite the surface similarity.

A Prophet2009
Strip away the fashion and Shanghai glamour, and both ask: what do you keep when everything else is taken from you? Both answer: your friends.
A raw, unsparing film about friendship as the only currency that matters in a hostile world. Four women's ambition versus one man's survival—same fundamental question about loyalty and self-preservation.
But It's a gritty prison thriller set in France; the register is brutalist where Tiny Times is gossamer. Deeply uncomfortable at times.

In the Mood for Love2000
Both films believe that style—how people look, what they wear, how they move through space—is a form of truth. Both use visual richness to express the interior lives their characters cannot speak aloud.
Wong Kar-wai's masterpiece about yearning, beauty, and the spaces between people. A Hong Kong film about romance and restraint, where visual luxury carries all the emotional weight. Hypnotic.
But Nearly plotless; if you need narrative propulsion or dialogue-heavy storytelling, it will feel like watching paint dry in Mandarin.
