Dheepan
Jacques Audiard's Palme d'Or winner follows three Sri Lankan strangers who assemble themselves into a fake family to gain asylum in France, only to land in a Paris housing estate as tense and combustible as the war they fled. It's intimate, slow-building, shot with thriller instincts but grounded in real displacement — for people who want their drama quiet before it isn't.
If you liked this
A Prophet2009
Same director, same fascination with a quiet outsider learning violence to survive inside a closed, hostile system — equally controlled, equally tense.
But Nearly two and a half hours of prison politics, dense and slow to reward the patience it demands.

Les Misérables1998no page yet
Set in the same kind of Parisian housing estates, it compresses the pressure of policing and poverty into one nerve-shredding day.
But Its anger is louder and more explicit than Dheepan's slow, watchful burn.
La Haine1995no page yet
The godfather of French banlieue cinema — black-and-white, furious, following three friends through one combustible day.
But Nearly thirty years old now, and its politics land blunter than Audiard's.
The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Le Havre2011
Same French setting, same migrant-crossing stakes — but where Audiard finds menace, Kaurismäki finds grace. A study in how tone alone can remake an identical situation.
A French port-town fable about a shoe-shiner helping a young refugee evade capture, told with deadpan tenderness and near-fairytale hope.
But Its whimsy and gentle humour are about as far from Dheepan's dread as a film can get.

Capernaum2018
A ferocious, heartbreaking look at survival on the margins seen through a child's eyes, with the same unsentimental eye on institutional failure.
But Even bleaker than Dheepan, and its child's-eye view can feel almost unbearable.

Mediterranea2015no page yet
Follows a migrant's journey from West Africa into Italy's underbelly with the same handheld intimacy and refusal to soften exploitation.
But Rougher and less polished, and it offers little in the way of resolution.
Girlhood2014no page yet
Same Paris-periphery world, but told through teenage girls carving out loyalty and identity amid poverty and violence.
But Lighter on plot — this is a film about mood and character more than dramatic incident.
Timbuktu2014no page yet
A family trying to hold onto ordinary life under occupation, with the same tension between tenderness and encroaching violence.
But More meditative and spare — some will find the pace too slow.
In This World2003no page yet
A docu-fiction hybrid following two refugees' overland journey to Britain, sharing Dheepan's interest in the physical, bureaucratic reality of displacement.
But Deliberately rough aesthetic and a downbeat, unresolved ending.
The Kite Runner2007no page yet
A story of displacement, guilt, and reinvention after fleeing war, carrying the same weight of trauma resurfacing in a new country.
But More melodramatic and sentimental where Dheepan stays cool and observational.
Man on Fire2004
Audiard has pointed to American genre cinema as an influence on Dheepan's own late turn into vigilante violence; this is that engine running wide open, no apology attached.
A traumatised ex-soldier assigned to protect a child slowly, then violently, becomes their sole line of defence — adrenaline where Dheepan is restraint.
But Glossy, maximalist, and morally simple in a way Audiard's film pointedly refuses to be.

For Sama2019
Where Dheepan dramatises displacement through invented characters, this is the same experience lived and filmed by the person inside it — the fiction's shadow made literal.
A young mother's own footage of raising a child through the siege of Aleppo turns the abstraction of "war refugee" into something devastatingly specific.
But It's nonfiction and unfiltered — no fictional distance, no cushion, and it does not look away.
