Commando 2 - The Black Money Trail

A high-octane heist thriller following an elite Indian commando team sent to Malaysia to extract a black money kingpin and recover laundered assets. Commando 2 blends tactical action sequences with interpersonal drama, anchored by Vidyut Jammwal's physical charisma. It's a slick, globe-trotting spy caper that favours spectacle and character chemistry over realism—designed for viewers who want wit alongside their gunfire.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy plotting where brawn and brains split the work, and a rescue in a foreign city keeps finding new angles to cut.

Skip it if you need restraint and believability, since this leans on big fight set-pieces, slick gloss and a runtime that stretches past two hours without much breathing room.

What it asks of you: Two hours of steady momentum, most of it in motion, with the tone swinging between tense procedural beats and loud, broad action that rarely lets up.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout2018

Tom Cruise's franchise at its peak: globe-hopping espionage, impossible heists, and genuinely inventive action set-pieces that prioritise practical stunts over CGI. The camaraderie between the team mirrors Commando 2's interpersonal warmth.

But Nearly two-and-a-half hours long, and the plot occasionally tangles itself. If you're not already invested in the franchise, the callbacks can feel like in-jokes.

Rosemary's Baby1968

Akshay Kumar leads another slick Indian espionage thriller with similar DNA: covert operations, international settings, and a team dynamic. Sharper on procedural detail than Commando 2, and deeply engaging throughout its runtime.

But Grittier and more serious in tone—there's less levity, which some viewers find exhausting over two hours. The political subtext won't land if you're unfamiliar with Indian news cycles.

Ek Tha Tiger2012

Salman Khan in full-throttle spy mode: romantic, explosive, and unabashedly entertaining. The international action and charm offensive are cut from the same cloth as Commando 2, with a stronger romantic throughline.

But The logic occasionally bends to convenience. Salman Khan's screen presence dominates everything; if that's not your cup of tea, the film won't win you over.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Night Manager2016

Both examine what it costs operatives to maintain compartmentalised identities. Commando 2 shows the camaraderie of a team mission; The Night Manager shows the loneliness of it—same world, opposite emotional angles.

A six-episode miniseries that treats espionage as psychological cat-and-mouse rather than just action. Tom Hiddleston and Tom Hardy are extraordinary, the cinematography is painterly, and it operates at a level of craft that makes Commando 2's machinery visible and impressive by comparison.

But Glacially paced for much of its runtime. If you need constant forward momentum and action beats, the introspection will feel like interference.

Johnny English Reborn2011

Rowan Atkinson's comedic spy thriller balances action and humour in ways that feel adjacent to Commando 2's lighter beats. Absurd, silly, but executed with real charm and unexpected action chops.

But British pantomime energy won't suit everyone. If you want your action grounded and serious, the comedy will feel juvenile.

The Raid 22014

Indonesian martial arts cinema at its finest: balletic fight choreography, visceral combat, and a narrative sprawl that justifies its ambitious scope. Showcases what action filmmaking can do when it prioritises movement and geography.

But Plot takes a backseat to set-pieces, and the runtime stretches thin by the final act. Graphic violence throughout—not for the squeamish.

Dhoom 32013

A heist film with real visual flair and surprising emotional depth beneath the spectacle. Aamir Khan and Abhishek Bachchan create genuine tension, and the international locations feel woven into the story rather than grafted on.

But Loud and occasionally overwrought in ways that feel dated now. If bombast exhausts you, the energetic editing will grate.

Spy Game2001

Brad Pitt and Robert Redford in a globe-trotting espionage caper told in flashback. Crisp direction, excellent chemistry, and the kind of slick professionalism that influenced the action-thriller playbook Commando 2 follows.

But 2005 sensibilities show in the pacing and tone. Modern viewers sometimes find it a touch sluggish, and the emotional beats feel undercooked.

Race 22013

High-stakes heist thriller with international locations, stylish action, and a plot that twists reliably enough to keep you guessing. Saif Ali Khan brings suave authority to proceedings, and the ensemble gels well.

But The plot occasionally prioritises flash over coherence. If you're looking for airtight logic, you'll find plenty of loose threads.

Main Hoon Na2004

Shah Rukh Khan's military-action-romance hybrid that essentially created the template for later Indian spy thrillers. Charming, unexpectedly earnest, and genuinely influential—this is where a lot of DNA from films like Commando 2 originates.

But Twenty years old now, and some choices feel dated. The tonal shifts between comedy and action can feel abrupt to modern sensibilities.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl2020

Both films centre on Indian military operatives executing high-stakes missions abroad. Commando 2 is outward-facing heist cinema; Gunjan Saxena turns inward to ask who carries these burdens and what it costs them personally.

A biographical military-action film starring Janhvi Kapoor that pivots on procedure, institutional barriers, and the psychology of combat rather than elaborate set-pieces. It's what happens when the spy-thriller framework gets rebuilt for character study instead of spectacle.

But Earnest and sometimes heavy-handed. The second half loses momentum as it turns didactic. And Bollywood's version of feminism doesn't always translate as intended.

A Prophet2009

Both follow a protagonist learning to operate within systems—rules, hierarchies, trust networks—to achieve an objective. Commando 2 plays it as action-adventure; A Prophet plays it as tragedy. Same structural skeleton, opposite tonal architectures.

A French-language prison thriller about a young man learning to survive and manipulate institutional systems. Brutal, intelligent, and shot with documentary-like precision. Tahar Rahim's performance is magnetic—a masterclass in subtle psychological warfare.

But Subtitled, deliberately paced, and deeply uncomfortable in places. The violence is not glamorised; it's matter-of-fact and grim. Completely different energy from action-thriller entertainment.
