Skate Or Die
A French action film that fuses suburban skateboarding culture with crime-thriller mechanics. Two teenagers witness a murder and must use their skating skills to outrun killers through Paris. It's kinetic, youth-driven, and treats skateboarding as genuine action language rather than decoration. For anyone who wants their action movies flavoured by something other than spy agencies and superpowers.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want a lean chase thriller where the set pieces are built around skateboarding through concrete car parks and city streets, and you don't mind the plot running on pure momentum.
Skip it if you expect a tightly plotted thriller with fleshed-out characters, since this leans on energy and stunts more than story.
What it asks of you: Ninety-two minutes that rarely stop moving, with the eye kept on bodies and concrete space more than on talk, and few quiet stretches to catch your breath.

District B132004
Parkour-based French action that treats movement as the core of storytelling. Inventive, propulsive, and genuinely exciting about bodies moving through urban space in ways action films rarely are.
But Parkour can feel dated now, and the plot is fairly thin scaffolding for set pieces. Subtitles throughout if you don't speak French.

The Raid2012
Indonesian action film that makes movement and martial arts the entire point of the movie. Relentless, visually inventive, and treats the human body as an instrument of kinetic storytelling.
But Very violent and almost plotless. Long stretches of fighting with minimal dialogue. Can feel exhausting rather than exhilarating if you're not in the mood.

Brick2006
High school noir where teenage characters navigate genuine danger with intelligence and resourcefulness. The youthful cast carries real weight and the script trusts them to be capable and clever.
But Deliberately stylised and verbose in a way that can feel affected. It's a puzzle-box mystery, so if you need constant momentum you may find it static.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Slap Her... She's French2002
Both centre young protagonists navigating danger and social friction through personality rather than resources. Both treat their young casts with respect and let them carry the action.
Franco-American teen comedy set in Texas where cultural collision becomes genuine comic territory. Young cast, quick wit, and real affection for both cultures. Treats teenagers as intelligent observers rather than punchlines.
But Shot like a Disney Channel film with that flat early-2000s digital look. The humour is broad and relies on broad cultural stereotypes. It's deliberately lightweight.

Attack the Block2011
South London teenagers face alien invasion with humour and genuine heart. Uses the young cast's actual voices and perspectives, and they're absolutely charming. Smart sci-fi action that respects its audience.
But The accent-heavy dialogue can be hard to parse for non-UK ears. Tone wobbles between comedy and horror in ways that don't always land.

Stormy Monday1988
British crime thriller where a young protagonist navigates corruption and violence in Newcastle. Stylish, atmospheric, and genuinely tense. Shows how a younger lead can carry real dramatic weight.
But Slower burn than you might expect. More mood than momentum. The plot is less important than the texture of the film.

City Hunter1993
Jackie Chan action comedy set in Hong Kong where acrobatic movement and comedy blend seamlessly. Pure joy. Proves that action cinema can be clever, funny, and physically astonishing at once.
But Tonal shifts are wild — comedy sits right next to brutal violence. The plot is held together with tape. Some of the humour hasn't aged well.

Bullet Train2022
Confined action thriller where characters use wit and movement to navigate impossible situations. Stylish, fast, and genuinely inventive about how to keep action fresh in a limited space.
But Tries very hard to be cool in ways that can feel exhausting. Brad Pitt's character borders on insufferable. The plot buckles under its own cleverness.

Smokin' Aces2006
Ensemble action film where a large cast of distinct characters collide in chaotic, surprising ways. Energetic, unpredictable, and genuinely funny without undermining the stakes.
But So many characters that few get real depth. Feels like it was assembled from deleted scenes. The tone is scattered and some jokes land harder than others.

A Prophet2009
Both feature young suburban French characters forced to think faster than their circumstances should allow. Both use the environment as character. The register is opposite — one is thrilling, one is terrifying — but the core idea is identical.
Brutal French prison drama where a young man must develop cunning and political intelligence to survive. Tense, intelligent, and genuinely harrowing. Shows how survival itself becomes a skill to master.
But Grim and violent. Confined setting means no relief valve. Long stretches without comfort or hope. Subtitled. Not a movie that makes you feel good.

Suspiria1977
Like Skate Or Die, it treats physical movement and navigation through space as the central action language of cinema. Both films believe that how you move matters more than why. The body IS the story.
Giallo horror film where movement through space becomes the entire grammar of the film. Dario Argento's direction is purely kinetic — you experience the film through how bodies and cameras move, not through dialogue or plot. Hypnotic.
But Horror film from the 1970s with deliberately artificial logic and melodramatic tone. The plot is almost incomprehensible. No subtlety or realism. The score is aggressively loud.
