Contraband

Other titles called Contraband: the 1940 film, the 1980 film.

Contraband is a slick heist-thriller about a reformed smuggler dragged back into the criminal underworld to save his brother-in-law's life. Mark Wahlberg carries the film through tense set pieces and double-crosses with the kind of blue-collar intensity he does best. It's functional, entertaining, and knows exactly what it is: a mid-budget action film for people who want stakes without complications.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like a lean heist-gone-sideways thriller where a reformed smuggler has to pull one more job and every plan tightens the noose, with grubby practical detail and a crew you never fully trust.

Skip it if you want a slow-burn character study or a story that stops to examine its ideas, since this runs at a brisk clip and treats its moral questions as fuel for the next chase.

What it asks of you: It moves quickly over roughly an hour and a half, asking you to keep track of who is double-crossing whom while staying with the gritty, sweaty texture of the criminal world.

The Italian Job2003

A ensemble heist with the same playful energy and globe-trotting logistics. Multiple moving parts, smart reversals, and a cast that clearly enjoys outsmarting everyone around them.

But The tone is lighter and breezier than Contraband, which might feel slight if you're after genuine tension rather than clever fun.

Den of Thieves2018

Gerard Butler and 50 Cent in a cat-and-mouse crime thriller with real action muscle. It has that same working-class grit and the appeal of watching professionals do dangerous things competently.

But The script is thinner than you'd like, and the film occasionally mistakes noise for drama in ways that get tiresome.

Hell or High Water2016

A modern western about men pushed by circumstance into crime, with impeccable pacing and direction. Chris Pine and Ben Foster are magnetic, and the moral complications feel earned rather than imposed.

But It's slower and more meditative than Contraband. If you need immediate momentum, this will feel deliberate in a way that tests patience.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy2011

Both are about people expertly navigating criminal or clandestine systems, but where Contraband is about action and momentum, this is about how much damage can be done by what you don't see.

Gary Oldman as a burned-out intelligence officer trying to find a mole in the Cold War intelligence services. It's entirely about observation, misdirection, and people concealing their true intent—the pure machinery of espionage without action sequences.

But It's glacially paced and assumes you enjoy slow revelation and ambiguous loyalties. If you need forward momentum and clear stakes, this will feel like watching someone play 3D chess.

Smokin' Aces2006

An escalating thriller with an ensemble cast, multiple competing agendas, and the kind of genre-savvy plotting that keeps you ahead of some reveals and blindsided by others.

But It's overstuffed and sometimes sacrifices character clarity for plot complication. The tone wobbles between serious and silly.

A Prophet2009

A prison thriller about a young man learning to survive and then prosper in a criminal ecosystem. Intelligent, tense, and completely absorbing from the first scene onward.

But It's in French with subtitles, and it's grittier and more psychologically complex than Contraband—less action, more observation and dread.

The Town2010

Ben Affleck directing and starring in a Boston crime drama with real emotional weight beneath the heists. It builds to genuine tragedy rather than just resolution, and every character feels known.

But It's longer and demands more investment in backstory and relationships. If you want pure mechanics, the character work will feel like padding.

Triple Frontier2019

Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, and a game cast in a heist-thriller about former Special Forces operatives planning one last job. Competent, tense, and nicely shot with real action.

But Netflix-to-your-home convenience sometimes shows in the execution. It feels less essential than its premise, and the ending doesn't earn its weight.

Killing Zoe1993

A cult heist-thriller where things spiral quickly and catastrophically. It has the same sense of a job deteriorating into chaos, but with 90s stylization that feels almost operatic.

But It's violent and nihilistic in ways Contraband isn't, and the plotting is less clean. If you want clarity of intent, this won't give it to you.

Sabotage2014

Arnold Schwarzenegger as a DEA task force commander caught in a web of corruption and betrayal. It's darker and meaner-spirited than most action films, with genuine paranoia at its core.

But It's unpleasant without always earning that unpleasantness, and the plot requires you to accept some character decisions that stretch credibility.

Sexy Beast2001

Both explore what happens when retirement from the criminal world is made impossible, but this one is interested in the psychological destruction and moral decay that Contraband skips over.

Ray Winstone as a retired criminal undone by the arrival of Ben Kingsley's terrifying kingpin. It's a character study disguised as a crime thriller, with one of cinema's greatest villain performances and aesthetic ambition to burn.

But It's unsettling and sometimes grotesque. The back half is less interesting than the front, and some will find it self-consciously arty in a way that distances rather than engages.
