Triple Frontier's cash-in-the-jungle premise is a direct descendant of this film: the weight of the money becomes the plot, and greed does more damage than any gunfight.

Three broke Americans find gold in the Mexican wilderness and immediately start destroying each other over it — the original story of money as a physical, corrupting burden that men have to carry, quite literally, out of the jungle.

But Black-and-white, slow by modern pacing standards, and Humphrey Bogart's paranoid unraveling is the whole show — not an action movie.

American Made2017

Tom Cruise as a pilot who starts running drugs and money for the CIA and the cartels simultaneously — greed dressed up as patriotism, based on a jaw-dropping true story.

But Plays fast and loose with facts, and the tone is glibber and funnier than the subject probably deserves.

Two friends stumble into war-profiteering and watch the money curdle their friendship in real time — a smaller-scale, funnier cousin to what happens once the cash is actually in the bag.

But Lighter and glossier than the subject matter maybe warrants; it wants to be a comedy and a cautionary tale at once.

Pure ensemble macho heist energy, cops and robbers who are barely distinguishable from each other, built for people who want the genre unapologetically loud and muscular.

But Overlong, over-plotted, and it knows exactly how much it's cribbing from Heat without quite earning the comparison.

More cartel warfare, more operators making impossible calls in the field, with Josh Brolin running an off-books operation that spirals badly.

But Meaner and more brutal than the original, with less of Villeneuve's atmospheric control.

If you want the same wronged-veterans-with-a-plan setup but pitched as pure popcorn fun, this ensemble caper delivers gadgets, banter, and zero moral hangover.

But It's disposable action-movie silliness next to Triple Frontier's seriousness — fun, but weightless by comparison.

It's the documentary version of the disillusionment Triple Frontier's heroes are living out — the same brotherhood and boredom and adrenaline, minus the fiction that lets them find an exit.

A documentary embedded with a U.S. platoon in Afghanistan's deadliest valley — no score, no narration, just what it actually looks like to be young men doing this job and then having to stop.

But There's no plot and no catharsis, just unfiltered, exhausting reality — it will sit with you differently than a thriller does.

City of God2002

Same drug-money ecosystem, flipped perspective: instead of outsiders raiding a cartel's fortune, this is the world that fortune actually comes from, and what it costs the people inside it.

A ferocious, Portuguese-language saga of drug money and violence in a Rio favela, told with kinetic energy and zero glamour. It shows the other end of the economy Triple Frontier's heroes are stealing from.

But Genuinely brutal and unsentimental — this isn't a heist thrill ride, it's closer to tragedy, and the subtitles and sprawling cast take some adjusting to.
