Rogue

Other titles called Rogue: the 2007 film, the 2013 series (Audience Network).

A mercenary team led by Megan Fox gets dropped into remote Africa for a hostage rescue that spirals into survival chaos. Rogue is a lean action thriller that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't: loud, physical, fun if you're here for gunfire and scrambling. It's for people who want their action movies efficient and their heroes competent but not invincible.

TMDb rating2.8

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like lean, mud-caked survival action where a small team's competence matters more than backstory, and you don't mind a pulpy, unapologetic grind.

Skip it if you need a story with deep character arcs or a steady tone; this one is mostly a run of violent set pieces with thin people at its centre.

What it asks of you: Its brisk 106 minutes move quickly and loudly, asking you to keep up rather than settle in for slow character work.

The Old Guard2020

Modern action filmmaking built on competence and momentum rather than spectacle. A small team, clear stakes, and genuine chemistry between the cast. Charlize Theron's mercenary feels kindred to Fox's O'Hara—weathered, capable, and tired of the nonsense.

But It trades bullets and explosions for hand-to-hand combat and introspection. If you're after wall-to-wall action set pieces, this moves slower and quieter than you might want.

Sicario2015

A masterclass in tension and moral vertigo. Emily Blunt gets pulled into a dark operation south of the border, and every scene crackles with dread. The action is surgical and brutal, the plotting genuinely unpredictable.

But It's slower and stranger than a straightforward mission film. The ending doesn't resolve cleanly, and the tone stays grim. Comfort viewing this is not.

Commando1985

Pure action cinema with Schwarzenegger as a retired commando dragged back to rescue his daughter. Practical stunts, practical gore, practical fun. This is the template Rogue is working from, executed with style and genuine inventiveness.

But The plot is a clothesline for set pieces and one-liners. If you need character development or nuance, this has neither and doesn't care.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Anna2019

Both star capable women in action roles, but Anna inverts the expectation. Where Rogue is grounded and tactical, Anna is fever-dream and surreal. Same DNA, entirely different temperature.

Luc Besson's neon-soaked spy thriller with Sasha Luss as a Russian model turned assassin. Brutal, stylish, and completely unconcerned with realism. The action is balletic and strange; the whole film moves like a dream.

But The plot is genuinely abstract. Clarity isn't the goal—mood and visuals are. If you need to follow the thread easily, you'll fight it the whole way.

The Lost City2022

Adventure action with Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock in a jungle setting. It's funny without winking, the action is enthusiastic, and it understands that a good time beats technical perfection. Likeable and loose.

But The humor might feel broad if you prefer grittier fare. It cares more about charm than consequence, which some viewers find weightless.

Triple Frontier2019

Oscar Isaac, Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal as ex-soldiers mounting a jungle heist. It's operational and grounded, with real tension about what happens when a plan meets reality. The cast makes every moment feel lived-in.

But It's a slow burn that prioritizes character over thrills. Netflix's pace and a mid-film pivot in tone might feel uneven if you came for pure action.

6 Underground2019

Michael Bay's globe-trotting mercenary thriller with Ryan Reynolds and an ensemble cast. Absurd in scale, relentless in momentum, unapologetically loud. If you want spectacle with a pulse and humor to spare, this delivers.

But It's exhaustingly loud and the plot is genuinely incoherent. Bay's style overwhelms the story entirely. If you value clarity or subtlety, you're in the wrong room.

Tomb Raider2018

Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in a lean, efficient action-adventure. The action is clear and well-shot, the setup is fun, and it moves at a pace that respects your time. A genuinely underrated popcorn film.

But It's forgettable by design. Nothing here stays with you after the credits roll. The stakes feel low because they are.

Strike Back2010

A British-American military action series with real tactical flavor. Multiple seasons of globe-trotting missions, character growth, and action sequences that feel earned. It's like Rogue but with space to breathe and deepen.

But Ten seasons is a commitment. Quality wavers, and the tone shifts between gritty and soapy depending on the arc. Binge appetite required.

The Expendables2010

Stallone's love letter to action cinema, packed with retired action stars in a mercenary rescue film. It's dumb and gleeful, a film where the appeal is the premise itself—these legends, in a movie together, doing what they do.

But It's cynically assembled star-casting over narrative. The plot is perfunctory, the dialogue is clunky, and it's aggressively indifferent to what you think of it.

Annihilation2018

Both are ensemble rescue missions into hostile territory, but Annihilation asks questions Rogue never tries to answer. Same premise shape, wildly different DNA—one is concrete and kinetic, the other abstract and dread-soaked.

A team of women ventures into an alien zone to rescue a colleague. It's science-fiction cloaked as a rescue mission, gorgeous and unsettling. Natalie Portman leads an ensemble into genuine mystery, and the action—when it comes—is alien and wrong.

But It's slow and it gets weirder as it progresses. Some find it beautiful; others find it pretentious. There's no action sequence that will satisfy an action fan waiting for conventional thrills.
