6 Underground
- Military action
- Relentless
Michael Bay's globe-trotting action thriller with a deliberately ridiculous premise: a dead tech billionaire assembles six black-ops specialists for a suicide mission against a dictator. It's pure kinetic excess—explosions, exotic locations, and quippy banter over actual plot. For viewers who want spectacle without apology and don't mind narrative sense taking a backseat to sheer velocity.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy slick, globe-hopping action where the set pieces are staged with real visual flair and the banter between hardened strangers does most of the heavy lifting.
Skip it if you want a grounded thriller with a plausible plot, since this one leans hard on spectacle and runs a long two hours with its car chases and gunfights stacked close together.
What it asks of you: Roughly two hours of nonstop momentum, with little breathing room between explosions and chases, so bring an appetite for loud, relentless motion rather than quiet character work.

Fast Five2011
The template for everything 6 Underground wants to be: a heist crew with chemistry, globe-hopping set pieces, and the understanding that plot is just scaffolding for fun. It's lean and propulsive.
But The series had already found its groove by then, so returning to it now feels familiar. And the humor lands differently once you've seen six sequels riff the same jokes.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout2018
Proof that an ensemble action film can be both massive in scale and genuinely clever about its own mechanics. Cruise and McQuarrie trust the audience's intelligence while delivering jaw-dropping stunts.
But It's serious in ways 6 Underground refuses to be. If you want a wink and a shrug instead of tension, this will feel laborious.

Red Notice2021
Same Reynolds energy and Dwayne Johnson charisma, lighter on the plot and heavier on the quips. It knows exactly what it is and commits to it. Brainless fun with charm.
But It's Netflix's answer to theatrical action, which means the spectacle feels compressed. And the heist logic is even thinner than 6 Underground's.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Anna2019
Both are international spy thrillers built entirely on movement and location—the world itself is the character. Both prioritize kinetic action over emotional stakes, and both understand that a beautiful setting is worth the ticket price.
Luc Besson's spy thriller with Sasha Luss, shot across four countries with the same propulsive energy as 6 Underground but with a singular focus. A lone operative instead of a crew, but the same vertiginous globe-trotting and moral blur.
But It's cold and deliberately distant from its protagonist. Where 6 Underground wants you to love the team, Anna keeps you at a remove. The twist lands hard or doesn't at all.

Bullet Train2022
Brad Pitt leading a colorful ensemble through escalating violence with style and humor. Leitch directs with verve, and the script treats its premise as a playground rather than a problem.
But The cutesy character designs and pop soundtrack might feel cartoonish. It's deliberately artificial in ways that won't land for everyone.

Extraction2020
Chris Hemsworth in a tight action thriller with a single-location premise that lets the choreography breathe. Brutal, focused, and more coherent than its peers without being stuffy.
But It's grim and largely humorless. If you want wisecracks and camaraderie, this is a solo mission that doesn't invite company.

Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard2021
Ryan Reynolds reuniting with Antonio Banderas for chaos and quips across Europe. It's dumb with such confidence that the dumbness becomes the point. Refreshingly unpretentious.
But The screenplay is tissue-thin, and the plot genuinely makes no sense. It's asking you to supply all the fun yourself.

Atomic Blonde2017
Charlize Theron as an undercover MI6 agent in Cold War Berlin. The action is real and intricate, shot with clarity and style. A spy thriller that respects its own craft.
But It's considerably more grounded than 6 Underground, with a somber tone underneath. The action is a means, not an excuse.

Jungle Cruise2021
The Rock and Emily Blunt bickering their way upriver in pursuit of a mystical tree. It's adventure-film comfort food with genuine warmth and chemistry that makes the formula feel earned.
But The CGI creatures are weak, and the plot is obligatory. It's more interested in being likable than exciting, which isn't the same thing.

RED 22013
Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich as retired spies reactivated for one last job. It's lighter and stranger than its predecessor, with real oddball charm and an ensemble that enjoys each other.
But It's visibly lower-budget than the first film, and the jokes are gentler than you might want. There's a grandfatherly quality that works or doesn't.

Severance2022
Both are thrillers built around a charismatic billionaire and elaborate operational teams pursuing hidden agendas. But where 6 Underground explodes outward, Severance implodes inward—same structure, opposite direction.
Dan Emond's HBO mystery-thriller about a tech billionaire's corporate conspiracy that literally splits human consciousness. It has 6 Underground's glossy production value and globe-spanning scope, but inverted: inward rather than outward, psychological rather than kinetic.
But It's a slow build that demands patience and rewards obsession. If you want velocity and answers, this is maddening. No explosions for three episodes.

The Gentlemen2020
Both assemble international teams of specialists for dangerous operations, both revel in style and humor over gravity, and both understand that watching attractive people execute plans is the real entertainment.
Guy Ritchie's ensemble caper about international drug operations, corruption, and clever criminals. It has 6 Underground's playful violence and multicultural cast, but filtered through sharp dialogue and intricate plotting rather than spectacle.
But It's narrative-heavy and depends on witty banter you have to track. The structure is a puzzle box that rewards attention rather than rewarding your eyeballs.
