A Gentleman in Moscow
- Period drama
- Slow-burning
A nobleman confined to a Moscow hotel by the Soviets in 1922 must navigate charm, wit, and careful compromise to survive decades of revolution and upheaval. Ewan McGregor anchors this luminous historical drama with grace, finding both comedy and genuine pathos in a man who transforms confinement into a kind of mastery. Elegant, thoughtful, and very humane.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love a patient, witty story where a life gets shaped by small rituals, quiet friendships and the slow pleasure of a well-run household, rather than by plot twists.
Skip it if you want fast momentum or a lot of action, since eight episodes of about 48 minutes unfold at a measured, conversational pace and rarely hurry to a payoff.
What it asks of you: Settle in for eight hour-ish evenings of unhurried storytelling, where warmth and gentle melancholy sit side by side and attention rewards you for noticing the details.

The Remains of the Day1993
A butler's dignified restraint masks a life of sacrifice and regret. Like Rostov, Stevens embodies the tragedy of choosing duty over desire, watched through the lens of someone reckoning with their choices too late.
But Glacially paced and emotionally muted; the greatest moments happen in silences and glances. If you need plot momentum, this will feel like watching paint dry.

Godless2017
A Western where a woman-run town creates impossible moral compromises for a drifter. Both stories pit individual grace against systems designed to crush it, with characters who survive through wit and careful negotiation.
But Brutal in its violence and darker in register overall. The show earns its bleakness, but it's a heavier watch than Rostov's elegant melancholy.

The Diplomat2023
Political maneuvering wrapped in charm and champagne. An ambassador navigates systems of power through intelligence and personality rather than brute force—the same survival mechanism Rostov perfects.
But Modern day and glossy; the stakes feel smaller and the tone lighter. Some will find it insufficiently serious for what's at stake.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
A Prophet2009
Both are about men confined to a closed system who become indispensable to its functioning through understanding human nature better than those in charge. Rostov's hotel mirrors the prison's economy.
A young man imprisoned in a brutal French prison must master its hidden hierarchies to survive. Like Rostov, he transforms confinement into dominion through intelligence and psychological manipulation—but stripped of charm and elegance, showing the cost.
But Violent, claustrophobic, and uncompromising. This is carceral realism, not genteel melodrama; it's hard to watch and sometimes gratuitous.

The Personal History of David Copperfield2019
A man of charm and wit finds his place in the world through talent and adaptability. Dickens's theme of reinvention echoes Rostov's journey, told with visual flair and genuine warmth.
But A period film that deliberately doesn't play it straight; the meta-theatrical style won't suit everyone's mood. The narrative's shapeshiftiness can feel aimless if you want clearer structure.

A Suitable Boy2020
Epic scope, intimate character work, and the messy politics of a newly independent India. A period drama about people building lives amid historical upheaval, with McGregor-level acting throughout.
But Wickedly long and intricately plotted; you need patience and focus. The romantic plot gets outweighed by political machinery in ways that frustrate some viewers.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy2011
Cold War espionage told with intelligence and restraint. A spy operates through observation and psychological acuity rather than action—survival through understanding systems, like Rostov.
But Famously difficult; Le Carré's tradecraft is never explained and the camera stays distant. If you want clarity or warmth, this will frustrate you.

The Gilded Age2022
Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes examines New York's old money clashing with new. Characters navigate class upheaval through propriety and hidden leverage, much as Rostov navigates Bolshevik Russia.
But Sprawling ensemble with uneven plotting. Some storylines land gracefully; others meander or resolve through convenience.

Bridgerton2020
Regency romance with narrative sweep and a genuine attention to character interiority. The pleasure of watching people navigate rigid systems with charm and intelligence, though in ballrooms rather than hotels.
But Heavily stylized and occasionally melodramatic; the Shonda Rhimes house style won't appeal if you prefer restraint. Some find the plotting outpaces believability.

Mr. Sunshine2011
Both use a man of privilege watching from the margins as a lens on civilisation being remade. But where Rostov adapts with grace, Sunshine's hero is ground between forces he can't reconcile.
A Korean historical drama following an American soldier navigating the Japanese occupation and Korean independence movements—a foreigner caught between empires. Astonishing production, romance, tragedy, and that same ache of dignity amid historical cruelty.
But Subtitled, and structured around tragic inevitability rather than hope. Its emotional register is far darker and the pacing slower than most Western drama.

Dekalog1989
Both understand that survival under constraint isn't a plot—it's a spiritual question. Both trust the audience to find meaning in gesture and silence rather than explanation.
Kieslowski's ten-film meditation on morality using a single Warsaw apartment building as witness. Each story examines ethical compromise and the weight of choices—profoundly Russian-Orthodox in its sensibility and deeply moving in its humanity.
But Austere, philosophical, and glacially paced. There is no plot momentum here, only the examination of conscience. Many will find it difficult and unrewarding.
