Should you watch it?

Watch it if you are drawn to films that punish with style, where rapid editing, a pounding score and raw performances turn a slide into a kind of hypnosis.

Skip it if you need some light in what you watch, because this is relentless, bleak and uncomfortable from its first act, with little air to breathe between the blows.

What it asks of you: Its running time is short, but it is dense and unbroken, so expect to sit still with mounting unease rather than be given breaks to catch up.

Requiem stages addiction as operatic nightmare; Amy shows the same slow-motion collapse happening to a real, specific, beloved person, stripping away the stylization to leave just the grief.

This unflinching documentary, built from Amy Winehouse's own home footage and phone calls, charts a real, unstoppable decline with the same nightmarish inevitability — except nobody is acting.

But There's no dramatic distance to hide behind; knowing exactly how it ends makes it much harder to sit through than fiction.

The Wrestler2008

Aronofsky again, but stripped of stylistic tricks — a broken-down performer chasing one more high of applause and painkillers, anchored by Mickey Rourke's career-best performance.

But The pace is patient and unglamorous where Requiem is frantic; some will miss the director's usual visual assault.

Frank Sinatra plays a card dealer fighting heroin addiction in this Saul Bass–designed drama that defied the Hays Code — the first major Hollywood film to say the word "addict" aloud.

But Black-and-white and stagey by modern standards, its restraint will feel almost tame next to Aronofsky's sensory overload.

Spun2003

Same hyperkinetic visual grammar Aronofsky pioneered, borrowed wholesale and pointed at comedy instead of horror — proof of how much the film's technique, not just its subject, became a genre unto itself.

A hyperactive, trashy tweaker comedy that uses the exact same arsenal — whip-pans, freeze frames, breakneck editing — to turn meth addiction into chaotic, queasy slapstick.

But It's cartoonish and juvenile where Requiem is tragic; if you want your addiction stories to mean something, this will feel empty by comparison.
