Swallowed
- Crime thriller
- Crime
- Very dark
A tense thriller about two lifelong friends on the brink of separation, pulled into a dangerous smuggling run that tests their bond. Shot with claustrophobic intensity, it's a character study wrapped in genuine danger—intimate and unsettling in equal measure. For viewers who want their thrills grounded in real relationship stakes.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like lean, mean survival thrillers where the stakes are physical and the cast does most of the work, with a bleak streak that doesn't apologise.
Skip it if you find body-horror squeamishness hard going, or want the tension to ease off; it stays tight and unpleasant for most of its 96 minutes.
What it asks of you: Ninety-six minutes that stay lean and tense from early on, with little breathing room; it wants steady attention and tolerance for prolonged unease over quick payoffs.

Moonlight2016
Three chapters of profound intimacy between the same two men across decades. Like Swallowed, it finds transcendent emotional truth in the spaces between words, and in what we're willing to risk for those we love.
But Moves at a deliberate pace; more interested in feeling than plot momentum. Some find its quietness difficult.

Brokeback Mountain2005
Two men at a crossroads, torn between duty and desire, with chemistry that crackles beneath restraint. Understands how circumstance and fear can poison even the deepest connection.
But The tragedy is familiar enough now that some of its gut-punch has dulled. Heavy-handed in places.

A Prayer Before Dawn2018
An American adrift in Bangkok, deeper and deeper into illegal territory, with no way out. Visceral desperation, moral ambiguity, and a protagonist you can't quite trust. Shot with nightmarish precision.
But Relentlessly bleak and violent. The lead character makes choice after choice you'll want to scream at him for.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
When a Stranger Calls2006
Both examine intimacy distorted by transgression and physical constraint; both are fascinated by what two men will do—or endure—for each other when normal options disappear.
A Spanish film about two men—one imprisoned, one on the outside—locked in a relationship of dependency and control. Explores the same erotics of confinement and power that runs through Swallowed, but inverts the circumstances entirely. Shot in stark, clinical style.
But Very little plot. Extended sequences of conversation and silence. European pacing will challenge those expecting conventional narrative drive.

Green Room2016
A band trapped in a neo-Nazi punk venue with nowhere to run and impossible decisions looming. Unbearably tense, economical storytelling, and the kind of escalation that feels inevitable in hindsight.
But Brutal and nihilistic. If you need hope or a clever escape, you won't find it.

Lamb2021
An Icelandic nightmare about grief and transgression, where intimacy and wrongness blur. Visually stunning and deeply unsettling. A film that doesn't look or feel like anything else.
But Deliberately cryptic and slow-burn. Some viewers will find it pretentious or simply impenetrable.

The Killing2011
Danish crime noir with two leads pushed to their limits by a single case. Explores corruption, obsession, and the price of getting too close to darkness. Methodical, character-driven, hypnotic.
But The original series is four seasons and can feel repetitive in stretches. Subtitles required.

Requiem for a Dream2000
Four lives spiraling toward ruin, each one chosen and trapped by desire. Darren Aronofsky's masterpiece of addiction and delusion. Unforgettable craft and emotional devastation.
But Genuinely punishing to watch. The ending offers no mercy or redemption, only understanding. Some find it manipulative.

Locke2014
Tom Hardy alone in a car for 90 minutes, unraveling the wreckage of his choices through phone conversations. A masterclass in tension, intimacy, and the slow collapse of a life. Proof that constraint breeds brilliance.
But One actor, one location. If you need visual variety or conventional drama, this will feel suffocating.

It Comes at Night2017
Two families isolated together, paranoia metastasizing in close quarters. Trey Edward Shults builds dread from the friction of proximity and the impossibility of trust. Atmosphere over gore.
But Deliberately vague about what's actually threatening. Some viewers resent ambiguity and want answers the film refuses to give.

Under the Skin2014
Both films trust atmosphere and dread over exposition; both are about predation and vulnerability wrapped in quiet, intimate frames; both hold their audience in a state of not-quite-knowing.
An alien in human form hunting through Scotland, shot like a fever dream. Jonathan Glazel creates unbearable tension from mundane locations. Hypnotic, strange, and deeply unsettling in ways plot summaries can't capture.
But Experimental and oblique. There's almost no dialogue, no conventional character arc, and it demands you surrender to mood over meaning. Many find it insufferable.

Funny Games2008
Both films weaponize their formal choices to trap the audience in the same helplessness as their characters; both are about the mechanics of vulnerability and control; both refuse to let you look away or feel clean.
A home invasion thriller that turns on the audience itself, breaking the fourth wall to ask why we watch violence for entertainment. Fractured tension, formal brilliance, and a moral argument embedded in every frame. Haneke at his most provocative.
But Deliberately punishing and withholding. The violence is real enough that many feel manipulated into complicity. Not cathartic; designed to leave you uncomfortable.
