Johnny Guitar is less a Western than a fever dream wearing one — Joan Crawford's gun-slinging saloon owner faces down a righteous mob in colours too vivid to be real, dialogue too heightened to be naturalistic. Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like Westerns that play like melodrama, where the gunfights matter less than the jealous rivalries, bruised pride and sharp-tongued talk between two women who refuse to back down.

Skip it if you want a lean shoot-em-up; the talky, stagey dialogue and bold, heightened emotion can feel like a play performed in a saloon.

What it asks of you: Running a little under two hours, it unfolds at a deliberate, unhurried pace, and it wants you to lean in for the talk as much as the gunplay.

Both are stories about a woman punished by a frightened community for refusing to be small; Johnny Guitar plays it as camp opera, this plays the identical accusation as cosmic dread.

A community's fear of a woman's sexuality and independence curdles into accusation and violence — the same engine as Vienna's saloon siege, restaked in Puritan New England and played dead straight as horror.

But It's slow, folkloric, and genuinely unsettling rather than fun — a very different kind of watching experience.
