Sergeants 3
- Comedy western
- Light-hearted
A western comedy starring the Rat Pack as cavalry sergeants in 1870s Indian Territory. It's loose and improvisational, built on the chemistry of Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. riffing together. The plot barely matters—what you're watching is five friends having the time of their lives on camera, with jokes, songs, and romantic entanglements. It's for anyone who loves the Rat Pack's particular brand of charisma and doesn't mind a story that exists mainly as scaffolding for their personalities.
If you liked this
Ocean's Eleven1960
The original heist film that made the Rat Pack cool. Same ensemble energy as Sergeants 3, but tighter plotting and genuine suspense underneath the swagger and nightclub glamour.
But It's slick and cynical in ways that feel dated; the women exist mainly to be conquered. And if you've seen the Soderbergh remakes, the original pales by comparison.

Robin and the 7 Hoods1964
Sinatra, Martin, Davis, and Lawford again, this time as Robin Hood gangsters in Prohibition-era Chicago. Same loose, improvisational comedy but with better music and a setting that lets them actually sing properly.
But The plot is even thinner than Sergeants 3. If you need a story to hang onto, this will feel like watching four guys mess around for two hours—which it kind of is.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance1962
A western that actually has something to say about myth-making and the gap between legend and truth. Shot in the same year as Sergeants 3, it shows what the western could do when it had real ambition.
But It's slow and melancholy, with James Stewart looking tired. There's no romance, no jokes. It's about disappointment and compromise, not fun.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Singin' in the Rain1952
Both films understand that the real entertainment is watching charismatic people who genuinely like each other do their thing. The plot is just the frame.
Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds as performers making it in old Hollywood. Same loose, exuberant ensemble joy as Sergeants 3—a story that exists mainly as an excuse to watch brilliant people perform.
But It's a musical and it's entirely earnest. If you came for Rat Pack cynicism and wisecracks, the sincerity and dancing will feel like a different language.

Cat Ballou1965
A western comedy that actually works as comedy first. Jane Fonda leads, but Lee Marvin steals it as a drunk gunslinger. It proves you can be funny and tell a story at the same time.
But The Rat Pack's irreverent swagger doesn't translate to a woman-led film. If you wanted that particular brand of masculine chaos, you won't find it here.

4 for Texas1963
Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra together again, this time as con artists in a western setting. It's messy and indulgent, but there's real chemistry between the two leads.
But It's even more of a mess than Sergeants 3. Ursula Andress and the plot feel like interruptions to the Sinatra-Martin riffing.

Rio Bravo1959
John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Walter Brennan holed up in a sheriff's office under siege. It's a western that understands that watching good actors hang out together is its own kind of entertainment.
But It's over two hours of people standing around talking. If you need plot momentum or action, you'll be bored for long stretches.

Support Your Local Sheriff!1969
James Garner in a small-town western comedy that actually understands how to structure humor. It proves that a western can be funny without relying on a famous ensemble's off-screen chemistry.
But It's smaller and quieter than the Rat Pack films. Without stars doing their shtick, you have to actually like the script and the lead actor.

The Ballad of Little Jo1993
A revisionist western that takes the genre seriously while still being fun. It asks what a western looks like when women get to be complex and capable, not just romantic ornaments.
But It's a complete tonal shift from Rat Pack swagger. If you loved the irreverent masculine chaos, this will feel like a rebuke of it.

Johnny Guitar1954
A cult western where Joan Crawford runs a saloon and the story is about the power struggle between women. It's bizarre, campy, and endlessly rewatchable for its complete disregard for convention.
But It's visually weird and structurally strange. The dialogue feels off in ways that take getting used to. It's not fun in the way Sergeants 3 is fun.

The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez1983
Both are westerns from very different America. One is about five famous men playing soldiers; the other is about a real man's impossible situation. They define the western by contrast.
Edward James Olmos in a low-budget western about a Mexican-American rancher falsely accused of murder. It's a real story treated with complete seriousness and dignity, shot with documentary clarity.
But There's no comedy, no stars doing their shtick, no glamour. It's austere and slow. It will feel like a different planet from Sergeants 3.

Kiss Me, Stupid1964
Martin plays the same archetype as in Sergeants 3—the charming lover—but Wilder shows you the cruelty underneath the charm. It's the dark version of the Rat Pack fantasy.
Billy Wilder directing Dean Martin as himself—a louche, irresistible version of the Dean Martin you know. It's nasty and morally compromised in ways that the Rat Pack films aren't brave enough to be.
But It's genuinely unpleasant. The female characters exist to be manipulated and betrayed. Wilder made it as a provocation, not as entertainment, and it shows.
