Grave of the Fireflies

Grave of the Fireflies follows two siblings orphaned by firebombing in the last months of WWII Japan, and it refuses every softening a war film usually offers. Isao Takahata's animation is gentle, almost domestic, which makes the slow arithmetic of hunger and abandonment harder to watch, not easier. It's beautiful, devastating, and not something you casually rewatch.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want an animated war film that trusts small domestic details, like a tin of drops or a jar of fireflies, to carry more grief than any battle scene could, and you can handle being left quietly wrecked.

Skip it if you need animated films to feel light or escapist, since this one is unrelentingly sad and makes no attempt to soften its subject or give you room to breathe.

What it asks of you: Under ninety minutes, but every one of them heavy; it moves slowly and patiently, lingers on stillness, and asks you to sit with its sadness rather than skim past it.

Both centre a child clinging to invented rules and imagination as the adult world burns around them, just using laughter instead of silence to reach the same wound.

The same historical collapse—a child's world dissolving under WWII—reimagined as satire, using absurdist comedy and an imaginary Hitler to sneak up on real grief.

But The jokes and cartoonish conceit can feel jarring or too cute for material this heavy.
