Should you watch it?

Watch it if you remember the 1978 animated feature as a formative, slightly traumatising experience and want to see whether a film about rabbits can carry real dread and grief without softening them into cute mascots.

Skip it if you want a light, bouncy cartoon; the animation is hand-drawn and sometimes stark, and its violence and bleakness catch many viewers off guard even though it is rated U.

But It's bleak with almost no warmth or humour, and the violence is human-scale and hard to look away from.

Fantastic Mr. Fox2009

Wes Anderson's stop-motion caper turns animal survival into deadpan comic adventure, keeping the close bond between creatures under threat but wrapping it in wit and style.

But The tone is wry and stylised rather than earnest, which can feel too knowing if you want sincerity.

A boy raises a fawn on a hardscrabble Florida farm in this earlier, live-action treatment of childhood, nature, and loss, wrestling with the same idea decades before Watership Down: the countryside is beautiful and it will hurt you.

But It's slow, old-Hollywood in pace, and its sentimentality sits differently than Watership Down's colder naturalism.
