Superman

Other titles called Superman: the 1978 film, the 2025 film.

The 1941 Fleischer Studios Superman is a miracle of animation—fluid, dynamic, genuinely astonishing to watch. Ten minutes of pure pulp adventure, gorgeously rendered in a style that influenced animation for decades. A time capsule of what heroism looked like in wartime America, and proof that superhero storytelling can be art.

TMDb rating3.5

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love vintage animation with the rounded, hand-inked charm of early Fleischer work, and enjoy a brisk, cheerfully corny adventure that gets straight to the point.

Skip it if you need modern pacing or sophisticated characters, since this is a very old short with stiff movement, a simple plot, and dialogue that reads as broad and dated.

What it asks of you: Only about ten minutes of your time, with no setup to get through. Expect patient, old-fashioned storytelling and a light, brisk rhythm rather than anything dense or demanding.

Batman: The Animated Series1992

The spiritual inheritor of what Superman pioneered: gorgeous art deco design, snappy dialogue, real stakes beneath the adventure. Same voice actor universe feeling, same commitment to making animation *matter*.

But It's 85 episodes across four seasons. The early ones are perfect; the later ones... well, commitment matters.

Metropolis1927

Fritz Lang's silent masterpiece about a city, a hero, and visionary tech-powered destruction. Superman is essentially a kid's cartoon response to this—same anxieties, same awe, but with a cape. Gorgeous restoration.

But It's two and a half hours, silent, and doesn't have a single joke. Requires actual focus.

Flash Gordon1936

A serial of the same era as Superman, just as energetic, just as fun. If you loved Superman's pace and aesthetic, Flash Gordon is the obvious next step: same studio, same hunger.

But It's episodic by design, which means cliffhangers and repetition. Exhausting if you binge it all at once.

Synecdoche, New York2008

Both are about someone becoming something superhuman. But Synecdoche is the cost; Superman is the gift. Watch them together to understand both.

Completely different register: Charlie Kaufman's three-hour chamber opera about a theatre director building an impossible replica of reality. It's also about a man playing a role bigger than himself, about the gap between image and truth, about what it costs to be the thing everyone needs.

But It's genuinely difficult. Depressed. No plot. Requires you to think while watching. Absolutely not fun in any conventional sense.

Young Samson1967

Hanna-Barbera cartoon about a kid superhero that understands something Superman does: the loneliness of being powerful. Surprisingly thoughtful animation that respects its audience.

But It's beautifully cheap in that 1960s way. The animation is literally limited because budgets were tight. Has aged into charm, but it's audible.

The Iron Giant1999

Brad Bird's hand-drawn masterpiece about a child and a towering mechanical being. Same fundamental relationship as Superman: the powerful thing that chooses not to destroy. Animated beautifully, emotionally devastating.

But It's a downer by superhero standards. Earnest in a way that reads as slow to people raised on quips.

Grave of the Fireflies1988

Both made during wartime anxiety—Superman in 1941, Fireflies in 1988 about 1945. One used animation for hope; one used it for truth. Same medium, opposite answers to the same question.

Isao Takahata's animated film about two children trying to survive during WWII Japan. Animation that matters, that *devastates*. Proof that animation isn't for children, that it can hold tragedy and grace.

But Profoundly sad. Not a movie; an experience that requires recovery time. You will not enjoy it. You will be marked by it.
